I'm afraid that none of this looks familiar to me. My line is descended from Croatan/Lumbees and some of my distant cousins still sit on the Lumbee Tribal council today. My g-g-g-g- grandmother Leah Goins was born in 1790 in Va or NC and her daughter, Rebecca is classified as a Croatan in origin. Daniel Goins, my g-g-g- grandfather was born c.a. 1824 in Moore County and moved to Randolph County after the Civil War. He later died in 1907 in the Old Soldiers Home in Raleigh, Nc.

Randolph County, NC. Columbus married a Mollie Vick and they both are buried in the Zion Methodist Church graveyard in Lancaster County per my Great Aunt. I know nothing about their coloring. They had 8 children - Tillman, Jim, Daniel, Lottie, Ida, Nan, Maggie, and Sarah Jane (Sally).

Sally is my ggrandmother and had dark coloring. Sally was born after 1885 and had my grandmother (Viola Lee Goins) at a very young age (my great aunt thinks about 14) in 1902. My grandmother (Viola Lee Goines) was very fair skin, but we are not sure who her father was. She lived with Sally until age 7-8 and was given to her Uncle Jim to raise when Sally married(her new husband wanted nothing to do with my grandmother since she was illegitimate).

I know there are some Goins that are Indian, but was not sure about our line. Was your Columbus Indian, if so, was it Cherokee or Catawba? There is a Catawba reservation in York County near Lancaster County. I have not researched this line much and am glad to maybe have a connection with Columbus.

Some of my aunts and uncles (children of Viola) have olive complexions and high cheek bones and we always wondered if their was Cherokee or Catawba relations in our line.

Thanks!

I have no direct information on your Columbus Goins, but there is a family tradition that states that some of our Goinses moved to South Carolina. I have not found that link yet, but the similiarity of the names "Columbus" may mean that there may be a link. Where is your Columbus buried? My g-g-grandfather, Abraham "Bud" Goins, is buried along side a county road in Randolph County NC. He was considered too dark to be buried in a regular cemetery.

Randolph County, NC. My GGGFather was Columbus Goins who lived in Lancaster County, SC when my GGMother was born. He died there and I know where his grave is and plan to visit it soon to get birth and death dates.

I know nothing about his parents or where he is from and wonder if this could be a connection to your Columbus and Abraham Goins?

No links. I have since found that my Goins are from Lancaster County, SC and when I posted this message in 1999 I thought they were from NC. Sorry!

Hello,

Do your Randolph Co. GOINS have any TN. connections? I'm trying to find a Timothy b.about 1845 who marr. Anna (Annie) IDELL/IDOL. They lived in the East TN. area. Union Co. in 1880 and Knox Co. in 1910. They fell off the earth between 1880-1910 and haven't found them as yet previous to 1880.

Thanks, Lynn

Do you know if Leah was related to Danial Goinswho was born in Virginia about 1755? He had a son named Isham who was also born in Virginia. Danial was my g-g-g-g-g-g-grandfather.

Herb,

I am studying the Virginia line very seriously. Leah was born c.a. 1790 in North Carolina or Virginia. Most census records have her born in North Carolina, but one census record lists her son, Daniel as stating his mother was born in Virginia. So there are several possibilities there. Leah's father, William Goings, states that he was born c.a. 1749 in Virginia, according to his Revolutionary war pension papers. William Goings is the son of John Harmon and Elizabeth Goings. We have not been able to trace either of these ancestors. Elizabeth may have been born around 1735. I believe there is some connection with your Daniel Goings line, but I have not been able to trace Elizabeth yet because woman are so poorly documented in the colonial records.

Thanks,
Cyndie
