Can anyone confirm his burial in Monterey Co., CA? Does anyone have an obit on him? I'm trying to document that he was the s/o Isaac Young, Sr. and wife, Ruth Waid Young. I believe Sabrie was m to Abiel Abbott. This info was obtained from LDS. Also per LDS, he was poss. b. in Hampton, CT. They married 16 Dec 1836 in Hatley, Stanstead, Quebec.

Any help would be appreciated!!!! :)

The only Sabrie who died on 10 Apr 1883:

Salinas City Index; Thur., Apr. 12, 1883, p. 2:

Died -- ABBOTT -- at the residence of her son, Dr. E.K. ABBOTT, in Salinas City, April 10, 1883, Mrs. Sabrie ABBOTT, widow of the late Abiel B. ABBOTT, aged 67 years.
[A noble woman, one who has done her life work well, has gone to her rest. She leaves 5 sons and 2 daughters to mourn her departure, hence -- Dr. E.K. ABBOTT; Mrs. Luella A. STOKES; AHH. & P.E. ABBOTT, of this county; O.A. & M.R. ABBOTT, of Nebraska; Mrs. Martha J. SPICER, of Arizona -- and all were present when she died, the first time they had been together for 20 years. The funeral took place from the Baptist Church yesterday afternoon, a large concourse of people following the mortal remains of Mrs. Sabrie ABBOTT to their last earthly resting place in the Odd Fellows’ cemetery.]

Seeking information on Louella Almena Abbott, Born in Hatley, Quebec, Canada in 1845....died in 1891. She was a daughter of Abiel Boynton Abbott and Sabrie Young Abbott.
Louella A. Abbott married James K. Stokes in Quebec, Canada in 1866. Do you know if they had any children and where they lived? I can't find any information on this couple.
I appreciate you help.

There seem to be many people researching this family. I found a number of trees on Ancestry and Rootsweb that include various members and then was able to follow up by confirming some of the information with assorted Ancestry records. I'm not related, I just enjoy searching.

One tree lists Louella Abbott and her family.
The information given says she married James Stokes in Hatley Canada (occasionaly people assume CA means California not Canada). She is listed as having died in 1891 in San Bernadino Co. CA. There are four children listed:

Sabrie Ellen Stokes b 6 July 1877 d. 17 Mar 1952 Santa Cruz CA Married Louis Allison McAllister in Iowa Aug 1900. I found her in the California Death Index as Sabre McAllister. Mother's maiden name Abbott father's name Stokes.

Edna Lucille Stokes b 11 Dec 1879 d. 14 Feb Corte Madera. Married Ashman Robinson b. 22 Feb 1869. One child listed, Markle C. Robinson b 4 Jul 1915 d. 23 Feb 2006 Red Bluff CA
In the 1900 census Edna L. Stokes was in the household of Louella's brother Edwin K. Abbott Alisal Monterey Co. CA. Another niece of Edwin's was also in the household. She was Etta D. North, presumably the daughter of Louella's sister Martha Jane.

Henry Abbott Stokes 25 Dec 1881

Thomas Abbott Stokes 5 Aug 1884.
Since Louella was not alive in 1900 I assume the census record with him in the household of Mary Stokes just meant he was staying with an aunt and she was mistakedly listed as mother.

There are so many records you will find with various members of this family. In the 1920 census Sabrie Abbott was living with Philomena Abbott, widow of Edwin K., in Monterey Co. I'm not sure whose daughter she is.

I hope this gives you a few clues. Contacting some of other researchers should help a lot.

Barbara,
Please accept my thanks for all the information on the Stokes- Abbott families. You have answers for many of our questions. My sister, Betty LaTrelle Harrod Stokes,(Harrod Family Tree on Ancestry.com) was married to Robert J. Stokes, one of the sons of Thomas Abbott Stokes b. 1884.
We never knew much about Thomas' family, other that the Abbotts and Stokes families lived in Salinas, Monterey, California, and in Nebraska.
Thomas thought that his father (no name) was from Ireland. We have no proof of this. Also, he only mentioned having one sister, not two.. (Sabrie Ellen and Edna Lucille Stokes). Now, it turns out that he also had a brother, Henry Abbott Stokes.
Thomas Abbott Stokes said that he lived with several Abbott family members in various places,(California and Nebraska) after his mother died, when he was only 7 years old.
We have recently discovered some information about Louella Almena Abbott b. 1845, d. 1891, (at age 46). We are now convinced that Louella Abbott Stokes was the mother of all four of these four Stokes children.
Our remaining unanswered questions are:
Where was James K. Stokes born,(Ireland?) and where did he die?
Who were his parents? Where did they live?
When did James K. Stokes arrive in the United States? (California?)
Where did he live with his family? Is Salinas, California, the most logical place of residence?
We know that Thomas Abbott Stokes and his sister, Sabrie, were born in Salinas, California. I don't know about Edna Lucille and Henry Abbott Stokes.

Again, please accept our appreciation for all your help.
Best regards,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I have found a few more bits of information on the Stokes.

I knew they had to be in the 1880 census and were likely in Monterey. I found Louella's brother Edwin and when I scrolled down on the page and there they were!

Year 1880, Census Place Castroville, Monterey Co. CA Roll: T9_69 Enumeration District 53 Image 0341. (actually Salinas city)

James "Sokes" b. abt. 1844 Ireland tailor
"Luella Sokes" b. Canada
Sabrie age 3
Edna 6/12

In the 1900 census Edna's father is listed as born in NJ but the Ireland birthplace is more likely to be correct. So many Irish (like my ancestors) landed in Canada because passage to Canada was less expensive than to the US. Whether he came by himself or with family is unknown.

I haven't found him in the 1900 census or later. It is once again a shame that the 1890 census was destroyed. I also have not found the other children in the 1900 census.

Another question is what Louella was doing in San Bernadino Co (Southern CA) when she died. She had so much family in Monterey I wonder if you can track down an obituary for her. The family obviously wrote one for Louella's mother.

Good luck!
