I'd like any information relating to my Great-Grandfather
Hans Andreasen Skallerud. Migrated from the farm named
"Skallerud" in 1868 to the U.S.A. The farm "Skallerud"
is located between Trogstad and Mysen. Would like to correspond with someone that currenly lives, or has lived,
in the Trogstad or Mysen area. Also, any other information
related to my Great-Grandfather or relatives that stayed in
Norway. I hope to visit the area in 2000.

David- I am interested in information about Hans Andreasen Skallerud as I think he was my great uncle. My grandfather was his brother Anton who lived in Minneapolis. He came from the Skallerud farm also around 1870.

When was Anton born? What else do you know about him?

Anton Skallerud was born January 7th, 1848 in Trogstad, Ostfold Norway. His parents were Andreas Hansen and Elen Axelsdaughter. I think Anton had two brothers and three sisters. I think Hans is one of the brothers. My mother spoke about her Uncle Hans when I was a child.
I think Anton came to the states in 1870 and lived in Minnesota.
He was in Kandiyohi Township first and then Minneapolis. I have the name Birthe Marie as a sister born about 1850 who also immigrated around 1870.
I have a lot of family information from Anton. There is also a website Skallerud.org that has a lot of information from
a branch of the family in California. Not all of that information on the website agrees with mine. There is also a cousin in Minnesota who has done much work on the family.
If this information is consistent with what you know, please let me know. I appreciate other links and information from the family. I see you are Brian not the original contact person from the earlier posting.

I was helping someone recently who had ancestors that lived briefly at Skallerud, but it was a different family. Most of your data on Anton is correct, with the exception of his place of birth. He was not born in Trogstad parish:

Trømberg parish is not too far from Trøgstad. For periods of time, Trømberg was a sub-parish of Eidsberg.

As you can see, his birth record says he was born at Søndre Berg, and his confirmation says he was born at Brattefos. I would go with Søndre Berg as this was recorded at his birth. Brattefos was recorded 15 years later when he was confirmed. At any rate, he was born in "Trømberg i Eidsberg" - not "Trøgstad". He moved to Trøgstad at a later date, but before he was 15.

Thanks for all the information. I wondered if you have information about how Anton came to the U.S.? I assume Hans came in 1968 but thought Anton and his sister came later in 1869 or 1870. I don't know where he met Gunhild his future wife who also came from Norway. I assume he came to US by ship from Oslo but I don't know where he landed. I also wondered if he went directly to Minnesota his his brother was there. Gunhild's family came to the US via Canada and then to Wisconsin before going to Minnesota in the 1870s.

Berthe Marie Andreasdatter Skallerud was born 21 Sep 1849.

Anton and Berthe left Oslo together on 29 Jul 1870. Their destination was New York.

The ship from Norway usually went to Hull or Liverpool, where the passengers boarded a different ship for the trip to the US.

Anton and Berthe arrived in New York 15 Aug 1870 aboard the steamship "Nevada", which had sailed from Liverpool. The passenger list mistakenly lists them as being from Sweden. This link will show you the passenger list, but only if you have a subscription to ancestry.com:

Wow! Thank you again. I had guessed that he had come through Canada not New York so that is really helpful. I will try to access the information on Ancestry. I am not far from a Mormon library and they will be able to help me. I may get a subscription at some point but wanted to make sure I had the time to do the research. I work in fits and starts.

Yes, the LDS will probably have the New York passsenger arrival records for that time period available on microfilm that you can order. Those films are also available through the US National Archives.

I don't know if you realize this - but when Anton and Berthe arrived in New York in 1870, they were probably the LAST members of the family to arrive in America.

Anton's mother (Elen Axelsdatter) and siblings Johan, Anne and Julia left Oslo on 15 May 1869 with the destination of Chicago. Apparently, Anton's father (Andreas Hansen) left earlier. In the 1880 census, Andreas is livng with his wife and daughters Anne and Julia at 507 17th Avenue South in Minneapolis, using the name "Antony Skallerud".

The records of people leaving the parish of Trøgstad are not very complete, but I did find Hans Andreasen Skallerud (born ca. Dec. 1845, bother of Anton), leaving the parish to emigrate to America on 14 Sep 1868.
