Samuel/Cemiul "Simon" and Sarah (Hatfield?) Odam/Odum

Classification: Query
Surnames: Hatfield, Odam, Odam
Listed: 1830 Wabash Co., IL Census: Known children: Wiley, Zedekiah, James, Mary, Ira "Frank"lin (known as "Bump") and Arvilla.

I think "Simon" may have been born in Arkansas or TN,

Sarah in VA or TN-I am not sure if Hatfield is her maiden or previously married name.

Both died in Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co, IL-he before 1850, she later.

He is buried at Hickory Hill Cemetary, which I think is in Hamilton Co., IL-I assume she was laid next to him.

Does anyone know anything about this family?

My mother was an Odom descended from Zedekiah. I have some info on Z. D., Mary, and Arvilla if you still want it.

I found "ZD" first in the 1850 Wabash Co., IL census. Seems he was born around 1831 in Illinois and married Louisa LeSuere between 1850 & 1860. The last info I have on him is the 1860 census. Zedekiah and Louisa had three children: William born 1856, died 1860-1870; James Perry Odom 4-3-1857 to 5-12-1929; and Sarah Elizabeth born abt 1860 and wed Alfred Durley, Sr. in 1878. An article in the Illinois Wabash Co. BIOGRAPHICAL indicates that Zedekiah died when James was age three. Louisa married a second time and had a child with the 2nd husband in 1863. I believe the daughter Sarah Elizabeth died prior to 1886, since Alfred marries a second time in 1886 and I do not find any information for Sarah Elizabeth after childbirth in 1881.

Mary Odom was born about 1838 and wed John Painter 7-4-1860. I believe she died prior to 1870 as she is not listed in that census.

Arvilla Odom was born about 1841 and wed Thomas Painter 1-20-1859 (Thomas was a brother to John Painter).

Hi;

In the ANTIOCH CHURCH CEMETERY is a burial for Hiram Odam, b. June 13, 1885, d. Mar 22, 1901, who was the child of James and Mary E Odam.

and Highland Memorial Cemetery has several family members as well, though spellings vary from odam, odom, odum, I am guessing that these are actually related?

Jeff,
Thank you very much for that info on Hiram.
Any info at all about burials of ODAM, ODOM, or ODUM would be appreciated. I am curious what problem my ancestors had with their surname. My grandfather formally changed his surname from ODAM to ODUM. It didn't do him any good though because I found him anyway.

Jeff,
Sorry, but I forgot to answer your question - yes, the ODAMs, ODOMs, ODUMs in Wabash Co are all related.
Thanks again for your help.

Eldon,

Those name differences are very minor and seem to fit with the general confusion that took place back in the 1800s when there was much less ability to read and write and some words and names may have never been seen in writing by the very people who went by them. In my mother's family, there is the LeGans family from France who now spell their name Leggins. My "Lochhead" family from Scotland who have diverged into lloyd, lawhead, laughead, and lockheed over about 3 or 4 generations. I also believe that those who came to this country had such a beginning ability to speak English that anyone writing down census information or immigration/ship records and so on, misunderstood them on a regular basis. I work in a college with my wife sometimes where there are a high percentage of foreign exchange students and I have a very difficult time understanding their English more often than not. And one more thing, some names just lend themselves to mistaken spellings. The less common a surname and the more open to interpretation, the more misspellings you might see, my friend whose last name is Chamberlain has seen his name spelled at least 4 or 5 different ways in records. And I have people write my first name Jeffrey as Jeffery all the time. It sure makes it hard trying to find people in records. I usually try my known spelling of a name first and then go back and see if the database allows wildcards. Most of the ones I've seen will allow you, if nothing else, to enter part of a name like "LIT" and will still find such a name as "Litherland" and "Little" without even using a "wildcard". I'll keep my eye out for any Wabash or nearby matches to the surname I find, I haven't seen it much before, but, then again, I wasn't looking at the time. Good luck.
