Best web site to post and display decendant tree for free?

I noticed Ancestry.com offers 'InterneTree' which displays a tree within a 2"x3" window... totally useless, especially if you have a descendant tree with hundreds of names.

Is there a web/genealogy site that will display a descendant tree full-screen? If possible, I would like a site that will maintain it for free (or very cheap) AND offer an option to create a password for private access.

(For the record, I'm using FTM v16 to create/post tree).

By "Ancetry.com" you mean Ancestry.com?

"InterneTree" is an old FTM application.

By "display" you seem to mean a box chart.

Some websites running "The Next Generation" (TNG) software provide ability to display up to 9 generations as either pedigree or descendants of one couple. But then all data but possibly a birth year are not visible. A box chart with just names is not all that useful, but with a tree as small as yours, it might work okay if you went for fewer generations. Some allow downloading that display as a PDF file. There is a real limit to how much can be shown even on a decent-size monitor screen, and the software does not adjust content to change for display on a very large screen, or if zoomed into.

For these sites you either upload a GEDCOM file created by your FTM software (not all permit this) or manually enter everything.

But each site has its own specs and options. You'd be best advised to try more than one and see how close it gets to what you want.

Tribalpages.com is a really great site.

It's an easy and free build your own tree with what you know site. It does have a search engine that locates your family members if other members have posted them. If you want to see a side by side comparison of how your tree connects to other trees there is a very small charge compared to Ancestry. There are no research stores there but the users there are much more friendly and willing to share.

Yes, I meant Ancestry.com... edit made.

In regards to 'display', I was inquiring as to which web site would show a descendant tree (600+ names) full screen (similar to FTM v16 software descendant view) and not through a tiny porthole like FTM's InterneTree. 'Box chart' meaning each individual box would have a name, birth date, death date and possibly adding a tiny photo per individual.

My chart has minimum verticle scrolling but a huge horizontal scroll bar, which is not bad for viewing (again, full screen). I would need to transfer data and NOT re-enter names.

I spoke with a web designer/host who offered to create a family home page and link that (with a password) to a chart page but he said that it would be costly to maintain and design esp if he had to recreate the tree from scratch (hence, the inquiry for this thread).

Also, I noticed no one mentioned the password option. Is this available on any sites?

Any site that you would "OWN" you should have an account and password, to control the posting of data.

You can use most any webpage hosting service to up load your data. These are from "Free" to $1,000's per month. I use 1and1.com and pay about $11.00 US per month which includes email accounts.

There are MANY tools out there to make these trees, just do a Google on "GEDCOM Trees" and you will find more than you would ever have time to check out.

You might even look into the "World Connect", the Rootsweb trees, which are hosed by Ancestry.com. That is where I post most of my information.

Worldconnect.com will do most all of what you want, but I don't believe you can restrict access to view the data.

If you have to end up using your own site to restrict access, there a bunch of programs that are "gedcom to html" utilities that have different looks. The oldest is ged2html.

The biggest advantage to using ancestry.com and worldconnect.com is that there are more people likely to find you as a result of a search. Using your own site will minimize the number of people who might find you in a search.

Google "gedcom to html" utilities.

"Worldconnect.com will do most all of what you want . . . ."--silverfox3280

I don't think WorldConnect can generate box charts.

It does have a bare-bones Descendancy-list capability.

"I don't think WorldConnect can generate box charts."

The pedigree chart can be graphical "boxes" or text - option to the person hosting the site. The same info is presented, but the text option gives more generations of ancestors on one screen, which is why I select that option.

"It does have a bare-bones Descendancy-list capability."

It's a bit more than bare-bones. It can be a list or register report. Neither one has many details because each name is hyper-linked to the each person's detail page, where all the detail is given.

__________________

There are probably more sites with fancier graphial interfaces, but all the basics are there.

1) A person's pedigree chart/tree
2) A person's ahnentafel
3) A person's descendant listing, in either a list or register report.
4) Each person's detail page, showing parents, spouses, children, and events, and sources.

One feature I like is that every name a person used in their life is presented in the index, not just a "preferred" name. The host gets a bunch of options to choose from in presenting data.

If a person is hanging out their genealogy to try to connect (which is what "worldconnect" is all about), it is one of the older sites. I don't know what its ranking is in genealogy name sites. It is probably way behind ancestry because all of ancestry's advertising.

Uploading is fast and easy. Takes me 10 minutes to upload a 60,000 person gedcom.

And... you don't have to give visitors the option to download any part of your genealogy, like ancestry does. You can make your whole gedcom completely downloadable or not downloadable at all - your choice.

So, I think it should be considered when comparing to other sites. But, if the original poster has the absolute requirement to only be acesssible via password, I think that would knock worldconnect out of the running.

OP wanted a "descendant tree," presumably a box chart.

miz777,

The InterneTree is the ability to view a GEDCOM file. It was also part of a Family Tree Maker User Home Page. However, if you haven't tried updating your FTM User Home Page, from within Version 16, you will find that you may NOT be able to update any of the Charts, nor the My Family History section of that User Home Page. You can still upload a GEDCOM file.

My suggestion is very different from others. That is, upgrade to FTM2012.

Reason: the next new PC you purchase, my not be able to support FTM Version 16.

The FTM2012 has a TreeSync™ feature, which will (1) open your Version 16 file, and (2) allow you to use the Ancestry Member Tree (AMT) for FREE. You then can control who sees what AND allow you and others to view your research.
