by post from the GRO head office in Roscommon, research certs cost €4 - you can download the order form at www.groireland.ie

Ask for a research cert and make sure to include the full index references - i.e. name, record type (i.e. B/M/D), registration district, year / quarter, volume number & page number (earlier records dont include a quarter)

it does not appear that there is an online option...

does anyone know if this it true?

is there another way to go about this? or is it a "hire a researcher" situation?

thanks

Mail it..

Attaching an example of a death record request. I download the word document from the goireland site.. fill it out and then mail to the address specified on the form.

And then i receive a copy of a death record.

The tricky part is figuring out the right record. Ussually i do enough research to be fairly confident that I'm requesting the correct record.

Marriage records are easier to track down. Becuase if i know the bride and groom names and have a general location and date range.. I just try to find where they appear on the same volumne and page number. I think there are only 4 marriage records on each page.

Hope this helps.

Of course the other option is... you can request microfilm at your LDS library for some of the records

Birth Records pre 1881 and post 1900
Death records pre 1870
Marriage records pre 1870

This is a cheaper option.. as each film costs between $5 USD - $10 USD whereas requesting the records from Ireland costs about $13 USD.

But i know an LDS library is not an option for everyone and of course some records are not available at the LDS libaries

I have a FHL close by...I just figured those records are only the transcribed versions....and perhaps poor transcriptions...

I contacted a woman form my FHC already...she seems inclined to suggest sending to IE for one too.

I quickly looked at the website...seems there is a way to request and pay for them online...and then they mail them to you....anyone used this???

No the FHL are not transribed versions.. You were given incorrect information. Here is an example of something i scanned at the library (this is a lower quality because my original image is too large). You can see how you get the entire page.

If FHL has the record i ussually order the microfilm otherwise send it off to ireland. Because when i order the microfilm
a) it is a bit cheaper
b) i have access to the entire volumne of records. So i will ussually write down information about other records that contain surnames I am interested in.

And one more thing.. I believe the record you get from Ireland is technically transcribed. They don't photo copy the original record. But it certainly looks official.
