How do I find the Enumerated Distrct for an area in Houston. If I only know the address of a relative in a prior census, how do I find the Census page for that address in the 1940 census? I've looked for hours getting within ONE block from the prior address and I can't find the census page I'm looking for.
HELP!!! This is like looking for needle...

I know the feeling. I've resigned myself to waiting until it's searchable and hoping the family name wasn't mangled in the indexing! Did you try entering the address in:
http://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html
to find the ED?
Good Luck!

If you know the address, go to your Place tab in FTM or mapquest, enter the address and get at least two cross streets (one on either side of the address you have). Then when you go to the 1940 census search, go to "already know the cross streets?" Fill in the blanks and it should narrow your search down to one district, or at least make it easier than what you had before. It will still require page by page search, but not as much. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. I was able to find what I was looking for except that the relative I was looking for had moved by 1940. Is there any way to find a person, at this point, if you have no idea where they live?
Thanks,
RR

Unfortunately no, or at least none that I'm aware of. Just going to have to wait for the index or maybe look at other family members old addresses to get a clue. Glad it worked for you.

Try looking in the City Directory database, if they are still in the same city, but just not on the same street:
