The Bonavista Archives contains textual records which date from the 18th to the 20th century. They include material relating to the history of the town and citizens of Bonavista and the surrounding area.

Hours of Operation:
The archives is currently only available by appointment. Please call or email to make arrangements.

Since first opening in 2007, at the Bonavista Courthouse, the number of requests for information
from the Archives continues to grow. Lack of space does not allow everything to be housed in one
building therefore the Archives is open by appointment to the general public.


Research Services & Fees:
For researchers visiting the Archives in person, there are no research fees. For those unable to
visit the Archives in person, or unable to have someone visit the Archives on their behalf, the staff of the Archives can provide limited research services. A fees for these services will apply. Visit our website for more information. www.townofbonavista.com

We're committed to assisting everyone who contacts us, but because we are have a small staff it can sometimes take several weeks to process an individual request. Please allow 4 - 6 weeks for a completed request.

I'm looking for information on the Penny family in the Bonavista area, specifically Clode Sound, Keels and Charlottetown.

My g-grandparents and several other family members are buried in the Salvation Army cemetery in Charlottetown.
Pearce Penny 1904-1988
Sarah Ann Penny nee Chatman 1905-1968

Pearce's father was John Penny b. ~1864 in Clode Sound. His mother was Rachel Domoney b. Apr 3, 1870 in Bonavista Bay. I believe John Penny may be the son of Isaac Penny B: 1832, (Son of George and May Penny of Keels) but I have been unable to confirm this.

Sarah Ann Chatman's family may have been from the Cannings Cove area. Her father was William John Chatman B:1874, Cannings Cove and her mother was named Miria Jane (1879-1951).
