Are there immigration records for Guernsey?

My ancestors William and Margaret Auger lived in St Peters Port, they appear in the 1851 census with their 2 children Margaret and William who were born in St Peters Port. They give their birth place as England (in a later census she gives Scotland). Will there be any records in existance that might record more detail - such as where in England and Scotland?

She gives her occupation as nurse he was a sawyer (he died between the 51 and 61 census) - so maybe any employment records?

I would be very grateful if anyone could give me a clue how to trace their origins.

Many thanks

Sue

Hi Sue

If this couple were married in Guernsey, then the marriage record may give more details, depending to some extent upon which church the marriage took place in.
There are no proper immigration records for Guernsey- there are some difficult to decipher arrival records for a short period in the 19th century but they don't contain much detail.
The best bet would be to contact the Priaulx library, http://www.priaulxlibrary.co.uk/ who hold the vast majority of available records, and for a fee they will undertake a search for you. They will also be able to provide baptism records for the two children, and the death records, etc., for any of the family who died in Guernsey.
Good luck with the search!

Andy Smith.

Thanks for the reply Andy - I had an idea it was not going to be easy!

I have no idea where William and Margaret were married, the only definites are the births of the 2 children in Guernsey and the deaths of the parents. Maybe a death cert. might give place of birth?

I'll get my facts together and contact the library.

Once again many thanks

Sue

There is a "Strangers Register" held at the Island Archives, whit copies of the index also held by the Priaulx library and the Family History section of la Sicietie Guernesais. It date from about 1890 to 1912 and is confined to those that did not own their homes or paid less than 3s and 6d. a week rent. It is by no means a complete register, but if your people are registered there is quite a lot of information in regard to origins.
