Surnames: Hughes, Roberts
I am trying to trace a Mary Hughes Pre 1901.

Born abt 1876
1901 - Servant in Liverpool
1907 - Married to Richard Price Roberts
1911 - Residence in Liverpool
Died 6 July 1963 London (name on death Mary Prys Roberts)

I have her from 1901 Census http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1901&...

And several items after 1901 (marrige in 1907, residance in 1911 and her death in 1963).

The census says she was born in Wern Western, Shropshire, England (I was always told she was born in Wern Weston) and i know her family grave is in Chirk (my next stop).

The issue is that Wern Western doesn't seem to exist and Chirk seems to exist in different counties depending on who you talk too.

I am having real issues finding anything before 1901. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can only help you with locations, being an ex-Shropshire lad. Wem is in Shropshire about 11 miles north of Shrewsbury and with a location Weston-under-Redcastle about three miles east.
Chirk is in Wales, but only just, being located half a mile or so over the Welsh border some 6 miles north of Oswestry, in turn about 16 miles north west of Shrewsbury.
Hope this explains some of the confusion.

What is Mary`s Fathers name and occupation on her marriage certificate. This would really help track her back, I`ve had a look but there are just too many Marys!
But maybe someone else will have more luck?
Also, following on from Dereks local knowledge i think the placename could be Wern, Weston Rhyn?
Hope this helps
Jacki

Unfortunatly i only have the England & Wales FreeBMD listing For their marrage so no parents.

I guess i am going to have to get the full cert as Mary and Hughes seem to swamp the area.

Thanks to you both i will continue the hunt.

It's "Wern, Weston Rhyn, Shropshire", which is a short distance from Chirk.

At that time Chirk was in Denbighshire, Wales (and is now in Wrexham County Borough). The town sits directly on the border, with hamlets like Chirk Bank on the English side.

Any births, marriages and deaths for that period would appear in the Oswestry Registration District.

Thanks everyone for your help, It seems that Weston Rhyn was part of St Martins Parish, Oswestry until 1897.

I have since found her age 16 as a servent in Liverpool and 2 possable matches for age 6

One with parents http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...

And one with her as a Border http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...

Does anyone know why at age 6 anyone would be down as a border?

It looks like i might have to take a trip to the family grave in chirk to get a positive answer on parents.

Thanks again

I think it has to be the first one, in Bronygarth, with her parents. In 1870, the St. Martin's townships of Weston Rhyn and Bronygarth were formed into the new parish of Weston Rhyn.

The second option that you've found is in Willow Street, in the centre of Oswestry town, which just doesn't look right?

One thing you haven't mentioned in your postings is an estimated birthyear?I mention this as I'm not finding them too readily in 1911.

It seems we could very well be on the march here! After finding Richard P and Mary in 1911,I also found a Tree associated with the entry. Can I ask about the couple's eldest son a Richard Austin C Roberts?Did he become a Sculptor in metalwork? Was he also responsible for the ornate work near to the entrance of the Liver building in Liverpool?

If so the Mary Hughes could be among my family of Hughes' who I have from the Chirk Bank area of Shropshire and who later lived in Liverpool.

After looking at my Tree,I now feel confident enough to name Mary Hughes as the daughter of a George Hughes born in Chirk Bank Shropshire in c 1851 and his wife who I have as a Mary Williams who I have born in Chirk Denbighshire in c 1849.

George was the son of a Richard Hughes born in Chirk Denbighshire in c 1825 and a Sarah Gabriel born in Glyndyfrdwy Denbighshire in 1824.This Sarah was the sister of my Greatx2-Grandfather John Gabriel born in Llangollen in 1822.

So all of these descendants are quite closely connected relatives of mine.

William Russell Jones.
