I have a branch of my family who moved from Scotland to about 1905. I wonder if there are any descendents still living in Montana and also of the LAIRD family that died over there did any leave and record behind eg a headstone in the local cemetery. Many thanks.

Just spotted on of mu LAIRDs as one of the 74 miners killed in the disater:

Edward J. Laird, 49, Washoe. Born Armadele, Scotland Mar. 3, 1803. Came to Washoe 1911, worked in mines 22 years. Married to Mary C. Thorburn, Mar. 7, 1921. Survived by his widow, 2 daughters, 1 son, his mother Mrs. James Laird Sr., 3 sisters, 3 brothers. Bearcreek Cemetery.

I've attached a photo of his headstone and him for you. Edward J. lost several other family members to the Smith Mine Disaster include a brother-in-law, a first cousin, etc.

could you please check the details re: James LAIRD on the 1920 US Census as I have just got a copy of the 1901 Scottish Census and some of the details don't tie up.

Don't be suprised if the the details differ somewhat between records. In my personal research I have encountered this several times. I have a great grandmother whose birth year is different in every census.
