Looking for information on this family in order to fill out my family tree.

George Ross was born about 1866 in Oconto Co., WI, and Augusta Mulvitz was born in Manitowoc, WI, about 1869. They were married in Florence Co., WI, in 1892; at that time George was living in Interior, Ontonagon Co.

By 1900 they were living in Bessemer Twp. with three children: George, Ruth & Maud. In 1910 they were all living in Ironwood. During this time George worked in saw mills--in 1910 he was a foreman.

I've been unable to locate them in the 1920 and 1930 census, but George was living in the state of Oregon by 1934, and he was last mentioned in a sister's obituary in January 1936; at that time he was living in Mabel, Oregon. I don't know if any of his children stayed in Ironwood or moved out west with him.

I don't know if this helps but, there was a George H. Ross that died in Lane county OR 1949 Jan. 20. Maybe an obit might help.

You said George & Augusta were married 1892. The 1900 census shows their oldest child George was born Apr. 1889 & they were married 12yrs....which would have been 1888. It also shows George's d.o.b as Sept.1866.

George & his whole family seemed to dissappear after 1910! Can't find his wf. or son George either! Do you know who his daughters Ruth & Maude married?

Not sure if George Jr's had children who may have stayed here in the Ironwood area, but I do know a Ross family. If you go to The Gogebic Range City Directory at http://mattsonworks.com/ you will find these Ross families:
1928 Erwin Twsp: Ross, Charles (married) surface laborer
Ross, Ewin, man home
1927 Wakefield: Ross, John (married) Castile Rd laborer
Ross, Mrytle teacher
1938 Erwin Twsp: Ross, Charles (Mary)miner, Newport Mine
Ross, Edward
1947 Bessemer: Ross, Mae (widow of John) school comm.
1947 Ironwood: Ross, Andrew
Ross, Charles (Belle)
Ross, Sophie
Ross, William (Emma)
1947 Erwin Twsp: Ross,Charles (Mary) Timberman, Newport Mine
Ross, Lawrence (Elvie) Gogebic Insulation Co.

Since this area is a very old mining region and the main employer for many years you may want to look for list of deaths from mining disasters. Tilden mine is in Bessemer, Newport Mine is in Ironwood but there are several in the region. Check above website for the mines, cemeteries, photos as well as who were living in the towns.

Good luck, hope it helps some

You're right--this family seems to disappear after 1910. I don't know who the daughters Ruth & Maude married, but I've decided to make a trip up to the western UP late next month to see what I can find, if anything.

I know that George died between January 1936 and December 1947; he was last mentioned as a survivor in his sister Mary Ross' obituary in January 1936 but wasn't mentioned as a survivor in his sister Sarah Dewar's obituary in December 1947.

I'll post additional info after my trip if I find anything.
