Looking for more information about Linus Fields (1780-1840) married to a Mary Butler, daughter of Truelove Butler (Vermont), one of the first settlers of Elizabethtown. Any information regarding Linus would be appreciated as I am attempting to find if there is a link between him and other Fields.
Thanks
R (Field) Smith

I'm not related, but Linus & Mary's daughter Catherine b ca 1805 married Solomon Landon in my husband's family on 27 FEB 1820 in Brockville.

She & Solomon & family and her brother Nathaniel Fields lived in South Elmsley Twp.

Nathaniel's son Reuben Fields b ca 1824 and family lived in Escott Twp. and many are buried in Mallorytown Cemetery.

Thank you so much for your response...do you know if Catherine had a middle name? The only info I have on the family is that there were 2 boys and a girl, Russel, Nathaniel and a Martha...

I took a look at my Elizabethtown early census index and found that Catherine was there in 1801 so she was older than other records showed she was.

In 1801 there are the parents Linus & Mary, with children Mary, Russel, Nathaniel & Caty.

They don't appear in 1802 or 1803.

In 1804 the surname is FIELD. The parents are Lynus and Mary, with children Martha, Rossel, Nathan and Mary.

In 1807 the names were separated into columns for males and females, with the parents at the top of each column. They were listed as FIELDS. Males: Linus (father), Russel, "Theosilies", Truelove. And for the females: Mary (mother), Martha, Caty, Mary.

1807 was the last census to name the family members.

There is at least one other Field/Fields family there that early if you need info on them.

It is possible that the son "Russel/Rossel" was actually named Roswell, which is often pronounced "Rozel". His marriage record, however, has the spelling Russell. The other Field family there has a son Roswell.

Very interesting. I am basically working from info that my grandparents passed on to me...some of the dates they gave me don't match the records, some do.
My older brother has done quite a bit of research and I am trying to find as much info as I can...I can only see Canadian records, so that is a bit of a hindrance especially seeing as most of my ancestors came from the United States, Germany, Ireland and England.
How do you look at the Census Indexes? I can't figure out how to open them to check them out...
The records that I have looked at indicate that the 's' wasn't dropped from the Field name until Reuben Herbert Jr.
The mother Mary Butler was the daughter of a Truelove Butler who was one of the first settlers of Elizabethtown. I have a copy of a page from the book "History of Leeds and Grenville" that has very little information. I would welcome any info you have about Elizabethtown, the Fields/Field family and anything else you'd care to share...
Thanks, you've been a big help.

Rebekah,

I've obtained the census images for Elizabethtown Twp. for 1797 and the Field family is there then.

I'm attaching the page where they appear. They are in column 4, to the right of about the center of the typed word Elizabethtown on the label on the left-hand side.

Listed are "Loynes Field", Mary Field, Russell Field and Mary Field, followed by several Butlers.

Wow! Thanks so much for sharing this! I was able to print off a copy for my records! I really appreciate you sending this information. I had put my research aside for a few months...I was working on my husband's side of the family which is very confusing, Scottish...lots of varying spellings of McRae and I needed a break. Your note has once again encouraged me to pick it up again and look...thanks,

Do you have any clues or information on who Linus' parents were? My brother has some info that dates all Field/Fields families back to the French...trying to see if there is a connection...several generations of information, dates, names etc are unknown...just wanted to check with you as you seem to have extensive knowledge...thanks again!

Rebekah,

If I was going to try to find out more about Linus, it would be worth following the Butlers. According to baptismal records found at FamilySearch.org, Mary Mars Field, wife of Linus Field and daughter of Truelove Butler and Mary McEachern, was baptized at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Williamstown, Glengarry Co., Upper Canada on 26 MAY 1793.

Also baptized were her Butler siblings Truelove Jr., Anna, Jamima, Margaret, and Jenny. That told me that Mary Butler and Linus Field were already married by then. So I checked for baptisms of their children and found that Martha Field and Russell Field were baptized the same day, same place.

You can get copies of the records from LDS film # 928968.

So apparently they settled in that area before coming to Elizabethtown. Truelove Jr. petitioned for 200 acres of land from Elizabethtown on 19 SEP 1797, as son of Truelove Butler late member of Jessup's Corps.

For what it's worth!
