I'm looking for info on the 2nd Regiment Columbus Guards. Am I in the right place? If not, can someone direct me?

Thanks!

Donna,

According to my information the Columbus Guards were Company G, 2nd Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Their first captain was Roswell Ellis.

Thanks for the info, Mike. I received transcriptions of several letters and Allan P. Matthews wrote to his wife that indicate he was drafted between May and Aug 1862. My cousin believes this is an ancestor of ours even though the middle initial "P" does not agree with my records. Is there somewhere that I can search that lists the soldiers names? I'm still new at research and appreciate any suggestions or help.

I'm sorry if this posts twice. I got kicked off line and wasn't sure it went thru the first time.
Thanks,
Donna

Donna,

I don't know what resources you have available to you. The best thing to do is look for your soldier in the Compiled Service Records. The Georgia Archives and a number of good Southern libraries will have these records. If you don't have access to any of these go to the following site at the National Archives to learn how to request any records from the National Archives:

http://www.archives.gov/research_room/obtain_copies/veterans...

Confederate state records are another good source of information. For more information go to the following site:

http://members.aol.com/mapurdy16/findsol.htm

Unfortunately some of the information at this site is dated, and I'm not sure all the links are still good.

Check your local library for a genealogy group or genealogy classes. You can also use the internet. There are a number of free genealogical resources, but be careful, because genealogy is the number one hobby in the US, there are a lot of people on the web who will charge you for genealogical information. Stick with the free sites until you learn the ropes.

Mike

My Great-grandfather was in Company g of the 2nd Ga. Volunteer Regiment. I have a list of the officers and men that were in the unit and the battles they were in. Please e-mail me and we can make arrangements to send you a copy. Nancy Jensen HorseshoeP@AOL.com

Thanks Nancy, but I have now found out that my great uncle, Herndon Wesley Haralson, was in Company K of the 2nd Regiment of Georgia Home Guard. If anyone has that list of men, I would certainly appreciate the contact.
