I am looking for anyone who is researching the McCLISH/MACLIS family of Miraflores, Baja Sur and Monterey, CA. The family moved to Monterey, CA in 1848. The two daughters, Ysabel and Pilar married American soldiers in Monterey, CA between 1848 and 1852/1853. The whole family returned to Miraflores around 1852 or 1853. Thank you for any help.

Baja California - From the message I assume that much of the information came from Pablo Martinez' book "Guia Familiar de Baja California". My interest is on the Smith family. Thomas Smith was already a resident in Baja long before the Mexican American war. He also was baptized in the Catholic faith and assumed the name of Javier Aguilar. His first generation children were baptized as Aguilar. After 1846 when the American Naval forces landed in Baja the family resume the name Smith and assisted the American forces. In 1848 Naval vesels evacuated several families from Baja to Monterey. "The Mexican American War in Baja" a book by Doyce B. Nunis, Jr. mentions the ships that evacuated the Mexican families to Monterey. It also shows a list of some of the claimants who were financially reinbursed for their losses. The connection I recall between the McLish and the Smith family, other than the common Aguilar baptismal name is from Pablo Martinez' book page 564, the register on the death of Eduardo Kennedy married to Pilar Aguilar (or McClis) who died at the house of Carlos Smith (son of Thomas Smith). According to the book, Kennedy fought with the American forces during 1846-1848 then returned to Baja. If you have other connections with the Smith family I am most interested in hearing anything on this family and their life in Monterey.

My husband's great-grandfather was Juan Macliz/s (McClish), b. ca 1848 (1833 on grave marker) in Baja California del Sur. His father was Juan Maclis and his mother was Josefa Murriquez according to his death certificate. He died in Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona, 7 Feb 1914 and is buried there. He married Angela Mariscal 16 Dec 1882 in Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona Territory. He worked on steam boats, then was part owner in at least one mine; he was a stock rancher when he died. I believe he is part of the family you are searching. Please contact me at kquintero@alumni.ucr.eduI'm looking forward to sharing family information, Kris

Hi There, I found your post and looks like your husband and I may have some common ancestors. One of my maternal grandmothers, Lugarda Aguilar was born in around 1878, and looks like she could have been one of the wives of your husband's ancestral grandmother (that is if I am reading the information right from the following link that I found: http://www.memorychest.com/mcclish/pafg02.htm#202) It looks like from the above link he could have been married 3 times. Anyhow, my maternal side is all pretty much from the Baja California area, and from what I understand, they were part Guaicura or Yacqui Indian. Do you know if your husband has any Indian ancestry?

Hi Marisol,
Yes, there is quite a bit of Indian blood in my husband's family on all sides.
As for the Aguilar/Maclis family, it's virtually assured that his wife, Narcissa Castillo was at least part Indian. At that time there were only 800 non-Indians in the entire Baja California Penninsula.
My husband's ancestor John McClish was born in England/Ireland in 1797. He and several of his friends were press-ganged onto a whaling ship out of England about 1820. He and his friends escaped from the whaling ship off the tip of Baja by swimming ashore. At that time the government of Baja was in the hands of the Catholic Church and it was necessary for them to be reBaptised in order to become a fully accepted member of the community. John McClish took the name of his Baptismal Sponsor, Juan Aguilar, when he was reBaptised. John used the name "Juan Aguilar" for a time and several of his children used the name "Aguilar". With time John again used his name in a Spanishized version, "Maclis(z)". Most of his children also switched from using Aguilar to Maclis(z) but apparently not all of his descendants made the switch.
So, it's quite possible that your Lugarda may be related to John McClish and his descendants. As a matter of fact, There is a Maria Lugarda Aguilar, the daughter of Juan (Aguilar) Maclis and Maria Rosario Fiol. This Juan (Aguilar) Maclis is my husband's gr-grandfather, however he descends from Juan's wife, Angela Mariscal.
Thank you for your posting. Perhaps we will find a family connection.

Hello,
My Grandfather's paternal grandmother was Narcisa Maclis. Narcisa married José María Castro. They had two Children Federico Castro Maclis and Crispina Castro Maclis. Federico is referred as Son1 in several URLs. I have my grandfather's birth certificate, with that certificate and the memory recollection of my grandfather and his siblings of Federico Castro I tried to find Federico's birth certificate in La Paz (Federico was born in El Trinfo, BC). Only to find out that it was no longer available due to a fire (burned by another one of my ancestors (De La Toba). Now that I have Crispina's DOB i will try to find her birth certificate. Re: McCLISH/MACLIS Family
Hello. My name is Devin Town. I am from Colon, Michigan. I have been doing some research on the McClish clan. I have a large number of family members who are named McClish. I would like to talk with you very much. I don't know if the similarity in names means anything, but there is that slight possibility that the clans may be related, or different branches of the same clan. I would very much like you to email me at magiboy22@hotmail.com I would really appreciate this. Anything you could volunteer to me that would help my research would be great. I have an amazing story that I am sure you would like to hear, on how my branch decided to move to America. And my aunt who lives near me has a large book holding generations of names and their relationships to each other traced through our clan. I would not mind giving you any information if you could use it too. Please do contact me, and thank you. Devin Town
