Corrections...Eley, Cameron, Giles, Snodgrass

Cochina's son Robert actually took the name Giles, supposedly after his white, slaveholder father in order to live the truth of his parentage. Snodgrass was supposed to be the name of Charles' father OR/and another slaver that Cochina was sold to at some point in her life before her freedom. Thank you. -D.C.

Hi! I just stumbled upon your message & am intrigued. I have both GILESes and SNODGRASSes in my family! I am African-American racially mixed & my SNODGRASS ancestors are from Butler Co., KY (Woodbury area). My GGreatgrandmother was MILLY SNODGRASS, who married JAMES CARSON--both mulattoes (or she could have been white!). Their son, GEORGE CARSON just happened to marry a white woman named RACHEL ELIZABETH HUFF around 1880. She is descended from the GILES family of Hunterdon & Somerset Counties in NJ & she was born in North Chili, Monroe Co., NY in 1864. Her 3d GGrandfather was MAJ. JAMES GILES, one of the founders of Piscataway, NJ.

Where were the people you mention from?? There might be some kind of connection!! Pls. contact me for exchange of information.

Hi! So glad to hear from you, and thanks for taking time to reply! -I have a family website that I recently put up, and I think you'll find it interesting. It has some info. on my family background (check out the Intro/Ethnic Origins section), surnames, photos, etc. -It is very much still a work in progress, but we all gotta start somewhere!! So, you can see it at www.unm.edu/~dfk, just click on Deatria Cameron, Part II. -The family is mainly based in Texas now (Camerons), though one of my aunts says we have a lot of the
Giles side in California...seems like the family has MANY surnames, and MANY migrations. But, essentially, it seems to me that the family "built up" in Texas...however, there are many possible unknown branches (like maybe yours, if we're related) that need to be reunited. History (a huge part being slavery) has separated many branches of the family. You can email me after checkin' out the site and I can give you more info. on the family...It is QUITE a tale, and maybe you'll enjoy it and find some useful info. Also, even if you think we don't have much, if any, chance of bein' relatives, I would love to keep in touch, sharing info. on research. It could help both of us, since -related or not- we share many family names. Perhaps one of us will stumble upon info. needed for the other! -Blessings, D.C.
P.S. -Oh, do you know of any origins of the Snodgrasses and Gileses in your family? Any slave/plantation ties also? (And the surname Hart is also a possible slaveowner I am lookin' for info. on, in order to find out who many of my separated relations are...and maybe even be able to contact some current-but-unknown relatives!). -Thanks!

Hi,
What part of Texas do these relatives originate? I too supposedly have relatives on my mother's side that originated from Madagascar but I'm just starting out with this so I don't have much info. I do know the surname is Burnette. My great grandfather and grandmother were named Fred and Louberta respectively and he had a sister named Ardelia. My grandmother's name was Molia and she was born in Sherman Texas in 1926. Any info you have would be great. I will look at your website as soon as I send this.

My gg-grandmother was a Cameron she came from scotland to canada and then to Michigan with her husband. I am just gettting started on the Cameron part of our family history. She came from Inverness or Argyllshire one is engraved on his tombstone and the other is on hers.

I am searching for information regarding James Cameron born 1844 in Scotland. I have been led to believe that he was born in Ayrshire and left Scotland with his older Sister when he was 8 or 10 years old. He supposedly moved to Ontario, Canada, and then as an adult to Sanilac County, Michigan. His Daughter, Agnes, married Daniel S. Armstrong

I am a Cameron. I am from Utah and am researching my Cameron ancestors. Research to date has lead me to Toronto, Canada and Birse and Nigg, Scotland.

How can I help?

Thanks for your reply....I would love more info on the Cameron name (roots) and its introduction to America. Also, one of my main ancestors was a man named Jake Cameron, who, I am told, was an AmericanIndian slave that eventually lived free in Texas, with his wife Cochina (African). I am trying to find slave or other records on him, and on their land holdings in Texas (I've been told that they were cattle ranchers and had land holdings as well). Thank you....D.C.
