James Madison Goad, called “Matt,” was born August 12, 1842 in Madison County, Arkansas, the seventh child of Alexander and Jane Henderson Goad. His namesake was his Uncle James Madison Goad, also a seventh child.

Matt is found in the 1850 and 1860 census in Bowen Township, Madison County Arkansas, in his fatherÂ’s household. In the 1860 census, he is listed as James M. Goad. On March 15 1863, at Fayetteville, Arkansas, he enlisted in the Union Army for three years. During the remainder of the Civil War, Matt was assigned to Company G, First Arkansas Infantry. His military unit is inscribed on his gravemarker.

In the 1870 census, Matt was listed as a farm laborer near St. Paul in Madison County living with Jack and Mahaley Jane Dickson Williams, a family from Floyd County, Kentucky and his future in-laws. Sometime after the census was taken, Matt married their daughter, Mary Ann Williams Matlock. Mary Ann was the widow of Samuel Matlock, killed in action in Arkansas during the Civil War. At the time of the census, Mary Ann and her three children, Samuel, Mabdon (male), and Rose were listed as living next door to her parents.

In 1875, Matt and Mary Ann Goad moved to San Saba County, Texas, living there until about 1890. They moved to Stringtown, Oklahoma in 1890, which at that time was still the Indian Territory. The area is hilly with a few valleys suitable for farming. Limestone quarrying and some coal mining has been done in the area.

Mary Ann died in 1930 and Matt died in about 1938. Both are buried in Stringtown.
