Doree/Bishop Medals

I am trying to trace the army medals of my father, grandfather and uncle. Their names were John William Doree (WW1), John James Doree and Charles Bishop (WW2). The medals were left to my nephew who I now understand sold them a few years ago, either in Sweden or America. Can anyone recommend a website where medals are sold and where I could place my request? When last seen the medals were altogether in a frame but they may have been split up by now.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Celia,

Probably very difficult to recover original medals but there are ways for next of kin to apply for replacements.

A very active discussion is now going on about this topic in the Veterans Froum of another website. They have given all the information you need to receive new medals.
Go to http://ww2.vet.org/ in the Veterans Forum for more info

Hi, sorry, but I have a John William Dore/Doree/Dorie in my family tree and I was wondering if it was the same person. Could you tell me any information on him? Thanks and I hope you find those medals!

Hi
My William John Doree was born in 1883 in Bethnal Green. He was the youngest son of Henry Doree and Harriet Dulieu. William married Charlotte Reynolds in 1906 and they had 2 children. My Doree family is of Huguenot origin and lived in the east end of London from the 17th century to the 20th. If you think your family might be connected, I would love to hear from you as I have masses of Doree information which I am happy to pass on.
Regards
Celia

I would love to hear what information you have!

Hello Stuart
Were your great grandparents Henry Doree and Ellen Bell? I know they had a son called Henry Daniel Doree who was married to Violet Sharpe and they had 3 children, Violet, Henry and Yvonne. Is this your line or was your great grandmother Eleanor House? Eleanor was Henry's second wife and I believe they had a son called John James Doree. I have done a lot of work on my Doree ancestors and you are welcome to look at my research on Ancestry. I have to admit, though, I haven't done anything recently. Have a look and come back to me with any queries. I would love to know where you fit in.

Hi Celia
Yes my great grandparents were Henry Doree and Ellen Bell. Henry Daniel Doree was my grandfather and his son Henry Doree is my dad!
I have had a look at your work and it's very impressive. Being quite new to this, it can sometimes get very difficult to follow. I notice that the tree has gone back to the 1700's, but I guess from there it gets even harder to trace back.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you get all that information? It must have taken you some time?
Also, where do you fit into the family tree? :)
Regards
Stuart

We are second cousins once removed! I first began my research in 1985 and had to do it the hard way - no computer then. I started with my grandfather, William John, brother of your Henry, who was killed in WW1. By buying birth, marriage and death certificates and using censuses, I was able to go back a few generations. Then I became a member of the Huguenot Society who were very helpful and gave me lots of information on George Doree (1844-1916) who made the velvet for the coronation robes of Edward VI and Queen Alexandra. I haven't been able to find the birth record of John Knight Doree so all earlier records are presumed and came from the Huguenot Society Proceedings. However, every Doree who I've been in contact with is related! Other info came from other people but I have always tried to verify anything which was told to me.
I am particularly pleased to hear from you as your great grandfather Henry was the closest to my grandfather. I knew very little about my grandfather and don't even know what he looked like as we have no pictures. Do you have any early photos of your family?
The majority of the Dulieu information came from other people - there are several researching this family.
I retired 4 years ago and have done a bit of family history research for other members of the family but haven't done any more Doree stuff for a while although my sister has recently been trying to find out about our grandfather's army life. Unfortunately, the records are lost so we can only find general information on the battles he fought in etc. Most of my time these days is taken up doing charity work for Oxfam but it is always lovely to hear from another cousin!
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Kind regards
Celia

Hi again Celia
I always thought that when I started to research the Doree name it would be quite easy as it seemed an unusual name. However, it seems that the Doree is very widespread and very popular!!!
It's lovely to hear from relatives, albeit distance ones, and just makes me more determined to research the family name even more. I have spoken to my dads side of the family and the details they gave me were very sketchy. I am trying to see if there were any photos, but this may take me some time. If I have any luck I will certainly share them with you.
I currently live in Eastbourne and work as a Sports Massage Therapist. I understand this genealogy isn't a 5 minute thing, so I'm guessing I'm in it for the long haul :)

Look forward to hearing from you again
Stuart

Hi Stuart
I'm afraid this hobby is very addictive too so you have been warned!
I live in Somerset and if you are able to locate the odd photo or two, could you send me copies by email. My address is celialacey48@hotmail.com.
If there are any certificates or censuses etc you would like, let me know and I can scan them in and send them to you.
If I can help in any way, just let me know but meantime, enjoy!
Regards
Celia
