Archibald McDonald

I am searching for information about my ancestors Archibald McDonald (born 1801 in North Carolina according to all his census entries) and his wife (Margaret "Peggy" Duncan according to a grand-daughter-in-law, although the 1850 Census gives Ferriby ( aged 52) as the first name of the apparent wife). They had 11 children according to the grand-daughter-in-law: Thomas (married Polly Beavers), Amos (married Nancy McDougal and Sarah Jane Smotherman), John (married Katie Stewart), Henry (married Emiline King), Willis (married Ann Johnson), Jim and Billie (both supposedly killed in the Civil War), Lydia, (married A. Johnson), Susan (married Brant Stutts), Mary Ann and Lydia. The family moved to Lauderdale County, Alabama about 1832. Some of the children eventually moved to Texas. The 1850 Census lists Archibald's occupation as gunsmith. I would even appreciate knowing the likely counties in which to search for an 1801 McDonald birth.

My records show Archibald born in Moore County NC. He moved to Lauderdale County AL . His son John Calvin who married Kate Stewart was my great great grandfather. John was born in NC, moved to AL then married a second time in AL to Sarah Ann Redden. They both died in Wills Point TX.
I have no information on Archibald's parents but am searching.

Recently I visited Wills Point and received much information about Archibald's descendants from Virginia Jones whose husband Harold is also a descendant of John Calvin McDonald. She had a group sheet that had parents for Archibald McDonald, but there was no documentation and she could not remember why she had entered the information. She said that she would check her records when she completes a move that she is currently making to a new house.
She had information from Clayton McDonald of Seattle that Archibald was married to Margaret "Peggy" Duncan and that they were buried in Killen, Lauderdale County, Alabama. I tried to reach Clayton, but he passed away last year. If I learn more I will post it and contact you. Please let me know if you learn anything.

Shelia,

It is nice to hear from a fifth cousin. Thank you so much for responding. I came across a similar report recently, but could not confirm the source. Could I obtain a copy of the source.

Thank you very much,

Jeff Olson

Have a number of articles regarding Archibald from our Florence Library Genealogy. Most are printed in "The Heritage of Lauderdale County Alabama" 2000 edition and other articles in various Lauderdale books. Archibald was a gunsmith from Moore County NC. He and other NC gunsmiths were brought to Lauderdale County to work at the Kennedy Gun facility in Greenhill AL. Archibald moved to Wills Point Texas (along with his sons John Calvin & Amos) and they all died there. Archibald's wife Margaret "Peggy" Duncan was also from Moore County AL. They had 8 children. John's daughter Martha Jane married David Humphrey and they are my great grandparents. The official historian of Lauderale County is Mr. William McDonald who is one of the descedants. He is very active in the genealogy field here.

I have many questions for you? Do you still live in Lauderdale County, Alabama? How can I obtain copies of the information that you and William McDonald have? What is William's connection to Archibald McDonald and Margaret Duncan

My family tree shows Archibald having 9 chidren but no Robert. They were all born from l825 to l838. It is possible that the Archibald you are searching for is one of his other son's child. If I find something I will contact you direct.
