Anyone searching the Knowles line that came to White County, Tennesse before 1820?
Also the Roberts line that is in White County around 1846?

Looking especially at the line of William Knowles born abt 1823, death after 1880.
He married abt Sept 1846 in White County, TN,
Catherine Roberts Birth: 16 May 1824, death after 1860

I am working on Knowles, Swindell, Roberts, Hutson, and Keathley. The families are so intertwined, it is impossible to research one without the others. I obtained hundreds of marriage records and tombstone records last year. However, my genealogy computer is in the shop right now so I can't pull up anything. I have not spent much time on my Roberts or Knowles but they John Sutton Roberts is my gggrandfather. Here is what I have on him in my genealogy program I do have some other documentation which Ihave not entered into my genealogy program.

For the Knowles - Wesley Pierce Knowles (1858-1934) married Frances A. Ward, sister of my William Jefferson Ward.

My starting family in White Co. was the Swindells, but there was so much intermarrying with the Hutsons, Keathleys, Roberts, and Knowles that I started collecting information on them, too, but only got to about 1900 in the marriage records. I haven't gotten the info into my genealogy program yet. I have over 300 marriage records and over 1000 tombstone photos (any connected to these 5 families according to the White Co. Cemetery book). I have 3 Cashdollar marriages and 4 Sutton tombstones indexed. I know there are several Cashdollar tombstones, but I haven't gotten them indexed yet.

Umm - don't remember seeing any Swindells but I'll look. I have information from the Ward-Cashdollar cemetery outside of Sparta as well as photographs. I attended the Ward Cashdollar reunion in 2006 and met many people I didn't know = and there were some Knowles there. No Roberts's. I have since made a trip to SE Missouri to the cemetery where John Sutton Roberts is buried. - but I don't have everything entered in my program.

I have come to the conclusion that if you lived in White Co., TN in the 1880's you were related. You can add to that intermarring list Hembree also.

William's father was John Knowles who married Mahaley Hardin.

Catherine'e father was William Roberts who married Sallie/Sally Humphrey.

I know that there is different spellings for the names of Hardin, Humphrey, Mahaley also.

Yes, these families did marry into other surnames, but nothing like the intermarrying of these five families. My laptop is down so I can't call up all of the connections, but here are some examples:

John Swindell married Elizabeth Roberts. Their son George Washington Swindell married Jane Knowles. Their daughter Anna married Peter Knowles. Peter was the son of John's sister Diana Swindell, who married William Knowles. A grandson of William and Diana, Peter Casen Knowles, married a granddaughter of one of Diana's brothers, Mary Cordia Swindell.

It's even possible (but I only have the word of an internet researcher with no given proof) that a lot of the Hutsons are descended from Swindells through Abel's first wife. Several of Abel's grandchildren also intermarried with the Swindells and Knowles.

I don't pretend to even being close to comprehending the relationships involved here yet. But I'm willing to correspond with anyone else trying to sort out these families, too.

Well I thought I would try to find as many of the intermarriages as I could. I GIVE UP they are two numerous to count. I am still working on the line, just giving up counting the intermarriage.

Oh yes. I'm afraid so. They had 5 children together. He wanted to marry her but she did not want to give up her home and property and go and live with him and his mother and sister.


So if though the Children carry the last HEMBREE if a DNA test was done it would show their line as KNOWLES..... So that is another one to ponder over.

This is a very difficult discussion to have on this forum. I don't think I'm getting across the point I was trying to make.

I admit I have a long way to go to get these families straightened out. I have indeed found a number of Hembrees in my research. But it appears to be a more linear relationship. The number of first and second cousins marrying among these 5 families is incredible. If there are a number of first and second cousins marrying between other families with these 5 families, I would really like to know about it.
