obit for Julia Emma Proctor
I am looking for an obit for Julia Emma Martin who was married to John Proctor. She died in Burlington, Skagit, on 12-25-1907. She was born, possibly in Morgan county, OH, around 1922. She was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and OA Pease in Skagit. I have the death cert that says her parents were Uri Martin and Rebecca Squires.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: obit for Julia Emma Proctor
Thank you for your reply. I had not seen the last record. I had found everything else and was hoping there might be an obit to see if there was any more info.
Her parents seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth:)

Re: obit for Julia Emma Proctor
Post the info for her parents and I will see what I can find...

Re: obit for Julia Emma Proctor
Her parents, according to death cert, were Uriah "Uri" Martin, born in OH and Rebecca Squire or Squires was born in PA. I know the parents were married in Morgan County, OH but can't find where Julia was born or anything else.
Julia first appears in 1850 census in WI with hubby, John Proctor, and then they moved to Pocahontas county, IA for 1870 census. John is about 10 years older than her and dies in 1888. There was evidently a mortgage on the farm and she lost it. She and her daughter and family move to WA.
I know of Uri's family, but he is a mystery to that side of the family also.

Re: obit for Julia Emma Proctor
Yes, I can see that Uri(ah) Martin is a mystery, as he is mentioned in a couple of books as requiring medical / mental health treatment, but there doesn't appear to be death or burial information on him.
The obituary I found for you lists her as Emma Proctor, born November 12, 1822 in Ohio. Parents Uriah Martin of Ohio and Rebecca Squire of Pennsylvania. Census records give her birth place as Ohio. Son John was born about 1844 in Wisconsin...
The online family trees I see for this family don't include the 1860 census for Wilson Creek, Spring Green, Sauk County, Wisconsin. Children are listed as John, George W., Harriet, Aaron and Oswald.

Re: obit for Julia Emma Proctor
Yes, Uri is a mystery. Various trees have 1843 or something like that as a dod, but there is no source to back it up.
I hadn't noticed that some trees don't have the 1860 census.
I think John Proctor was married before as there is a Richard and a Mary living with them in 1850 census. They are actually in 2 1850 censuses in WI, one as Proctor and one as Procton.
Since John was born around 1844, John and Julia were probably married a short time before but can't find that in either place, other than a John Proctor marrying a Julianna Southride in WI, and I wonder if the name got mixed up and that is them. But haven't pursued that.

Re: obit for Julia Emma Proctor
"Julianna Southride"; perhaps Julia was married for a short time before she married John Proctor?
You have the marriage for Julia's parents. The index I found which included them did NOT include Julia and John.
1822 was too early for birth records for Julia. Is there perhaps a tax list to prove her parents remained in that area of Ohio through 1822? That might be your best way to "prove" where Julia was born.
I checked these subscription databases for you: 19th Century U.S. Newspapers; Historical NY Times; HeritageQuest; Genealogybank; Footnote; and World Vital Records.
You should check the Library of Congress newspaper site, Chronicling America.
After checking 19th Century U.S. Newspapers I wrote the following:
--- What was John Proctor's middle initial? Was it C? (I assume it is "W") If you can determine where he lived at the approximate time of his marriage to Julia it would help narrow down a search. For example: a John C. Proctor is in Hudson, OH, newspaper articles as early as 1828. "John Proctor" brings up too many hits for me to easily sift through, although 1846 Milwaukee, WI, newspapers name a John C. Proctor in their list of letters at the post office.
Are you positive Richard and Mary C. are not the children of Julia? She would have been incredibly young to be 26 and have a 12 year-old son in the 1850 census, but it is not unheard of. Their birthplaces of Ohio doesn't really narrow anything down, does it?
I did a cursory search through the Wisconsin Historical Society online archives but didn't find anything useful.

Re: obit for Julia Emma Proctor
It's possible John's MI was D, only based on a newspaper article in Laurens, IA. He was referred to as one of the pioneers in Pocahontas county, Iowa. Below is what was found in the paper:
Wisconsin Argus August 13, 1850 page 4 Whereas, my wife Julia has left my bed and board without any cause or provacation, this is to forbid all persons from harboring or trusting her on my account, as i will not pay debts of her contracting. Dunkirk July 17,1850 John Proctor
My feeling is that John was married before and had Richard and Mary, 1838 and 1839 in OH and maybe wife died and he remarried. He was at least 10 years older than Julia. Have been looking at John Proctors in OH and have ruled out several. Think I have also looked at tax lists. A descendant of Uri's brother and I have been trying to find them. Uri sold property after he was held for being insane and then nothing else.
They have given me a perpetual headache!

Re: obit for Julia Emma Proctor
We know John Proctor was in Rock County, WI, in the 1850 census.
The Portrait and Biographical Albumn of Rock County, Wisconsin, copyright 1889:
"first wedding.. 1840... the first death was Mrs. Proctor's, at Cloudon Stoughton's. The first child was born... 1839."
It is possible the above refers to John's first wife; the timing seems correct.
The Emerald Grove Cemetery, Bradford Township, Rock County, WI, includes a Proctor, no first name given in the online site I found.
I know you have the following: From the Wisconsin Historical Society
Marriage Record Details
Last Name: Proctor
First Name: John
Day: 10
Month: November
Year: 1842
County: Rock
Volume: 1
Page: 129
--- Have you sent for the certificate to see exactly what it says? Juliana Southridge doesn't match any other record even remotely, and no Southridge found in records in Wisconsin at all.
