Apparently you are looking for the same person I am. I have a good genealogy back to Samuel
Longenecker and Anna
Shank, but I have had difficulty locating any records for Daniel
Longenecker, of Londonderry Township,
Dauphin County,
Pennsylvania and Anna
Shank of the same township and county. You seem to be using the "Record of Family and Children of Samuel
Longenecker" compiled by Theo. F. Longenecker,
Hudson Ave., Dayton,
Ohio. I have one addition and three corrections to make: John
Longenecker, my great grandfather, died July 5, 1911; Fanny married John
Coppess and Catherine married Daniel Wise; and Benjamin was their son, according to a record by Ellen M. Shields, p. 374, located in the
Darke County Museum,
Greenville,
Ohio. Regarding my great grandfather, John, an article appears under the
Greenville Township, p. 509, as follows:
JOHN
Longenecker, farmer and carpenter, Sec. 1; P.O Pikeville; another old settler of Darke County; born in
Montgomery Co., Ohio, Feb. 12, 1830; he is of
German descent, his grandfather (My note: Daniel) being one of four brothers who came from Germany and located in Pennsylvania; the father of John was Samuel
Longenecker, who was born in
Dauphin Co., Penn., April 5, 1789, and emigrated to Warren Co., about the year 1821, and, six years later, located in
Montgomery Co., and, in 1840, came to Darke Co. and settled in Richland Township, and followed cabinet-making and undertaking until his death, which occurred Sept. 14, 1842 (My note: should be 1852); he was married in
Dauphin Co., Penn., to Anna
Shank, who was born in the same county Nov. 19, 1790; they were the parents of ten children, of whom five are now living (My note: all are deceased now); Mrs. S. died in Richland Township Dec. 5, 1847. The rest of the article deals with my grandfather, John
Longenecker. Without more records it is impossible to determine who the father and mother of Samuel was. It is true that Daniel the first, brother of
Ulrich the first, came from
Hamburg, Germany, to
America, but he was born in 1666 and could not have been the father of Samuel; therefore, I must ask the question: Did Daniel, father of Samuel, come directly from Germany with three brothers or was he descended from Daniel or
Ulrich from Switzerland? The answer still escapes me.
By the way, I have pictures of the
Coppess cemetery and the headstones of Samuel and Anna
Longenecker. I had to dig Samuel's headstone out of the ground; only the letters e n c k were visible. I also have several old books that belonged to Samuel:
1. Sechs Bucher vom Wahren Christenthum by Johann
Arndts, 1843, all in
German. In his handwriting he wrote: Samuel
Longenecker, Bought in
Lebanon County Pennsylvania October the 17th, 1848,
Price $3.25 Cost. This indicates he was in
Lebanon County four years before he died.
2. German-English Dictionary dated 1834.
3. Die Bibel, ober die ganze Heilige Schrift, alten and neuen, Testaments, nach der Deutschen Uebersetzung D. Martin Luther's. dated 1837.
4. A New Testament in parallel
German and
English, dated 1850. This may have belonged to my grandfather, John, who wrote in it: Samuel
Longenecker Died Sep. the 14th, AD 1852, Aged 63 years 5 months, 9 days. Anna
Longenecker Died the 5th AD 1847, Aged 57 years and 16 days. Father and Mother.
