Back in the 1980s, I copied a booklet from the Virginia State Library Archives entitled "History of Amelia County". It's been a while since I read my copy & when I started reading it again the other day, I decided to transcribe it at the same time to share with others.

I think it's very interesting, covers a great variety of topics including Paineville, the early post office, tobacco raising & selling, mica mines, overseers, slavery, Infidel Club, Masonic lodge, Amelia County Marriages, Amelia County Court House, early life in Amelia County, early churches in Amelia County, Vaughan Family, brandy making, whiskey making, ordinaries, early doctors, Amelia Sulphur Springs, Mills, early Colonial church in Virginia, Old Paineville Church, early land grants, marriages, etc.

Surnames mentioned include: Allen, Anderson, Archer, Booker, Chappell, Clement, Ford, Foster, Gauldin, Jeter, Johnson, Jones, Orange, Perrin, Randolph, Seay, Tabb, Vaughan, Whitworth, Williams, Wingo, Wood, etc.

There are tons of places and names mentioned in this relatively small booklet.

Hello. In your notes you mentioned the Whitworth's were included in the site with the link you provied. Althouh I did see a large list of names on the left and right of the page I did not see Whitworth. I have some question and if you know Amelia County you may be able to help me. I have pasted the Thomas E. and Susan Whitworth 1880 Census info below. Nannie Whitworth is my GG-grandmother. Although finding ANY info on my GG-grandfather is more than difficult, even controversy about his *name. She had 3 sons, Aubury Thomas, b.Feb.29, 1884, Floyd Perkins, b. Nov. 21, 1885,Hicksford, VA., Authur Reese, b.Nov.28, 1887, (I beleive Paynesville) all with the last name of Hudgins. It seems there must be a birth certificate for one of these chaps that would give the fathers actual name and mother's maiden. Better yet, a marriage license but I don't know if they were married in Virginia as he was a traveling showman and Nannie married him while in her teens and he was 40, hence, all the cover-up of his identity. She left him while pregnant with Arthur and had him in Paynesville it is believed or where ever the Whitworth's lived because that is where she returned.

One more item. Florence, Nannie's sister born abt. 1886 lived in Jetersville most of her life. I believe she had 4 daughters the youngest named Charlotte Wood as Florense married man with that surname. I have attached Arthur's WWII registation as his contact person and address are Florence. HELLO, THOUGHT I COULD HELP YOU OUT HERE. MY NAME IS NATHAN, AND I LIVE IN PAINEVILLE, VA. BEHIND MY HOUSE IN THE WOODS IS AN OLD CEMETERY, WITH THE NAMES OF WHITWORTH AND HUDGINS CIRCA 1800'S. THE PROBPERTY IS POSTED, BUT I HAVE BEEN BACK THERE ON MANY OCCASIONS. I KNOW THAT ONE OF THEM IS THOMAS WHITWORTH, AND THERE IS A HUDGINS ( NOT SURE OF THE FIRST NAME), AND IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN THERE IS A WOODS

You have mentioned in a post that you knew where a Whitworth Cemetery was (containing marker of Thomas Whitworth- this is my relative I believe).
Can you please pinpoint this cemetery for me please.
For example: on a hill between two creeks 1 mile South of where the creeks come together?

The Whitworth Cemetery is located in Amelia on Genito Road, Route 616 behind a house across from the Paineville store.
One of the markers reads: Whitworth, Thomas Edward 18 February 1820 - 24 October 1898
I wasn't sure if you ever got and answer to your question.

Is there a headstone that says Elizabeth Southerland Whitworth? I am most interested in this cemetery. I understand it is private, but it would be wonderful if you were able to read the stones.
Elizabeth is of my family. She died in 1818 or 1820 and was born 2 Feb 1726 in Prince George County VA.
Thank you for any information you might find and share with me.

Thomas Whitworth was the husband of Elizabeth Southerland Whitworth, so perhaps she will be next to him in the cemetery.
