I am very interested to find out true origins of MOMOT. This is my mother's maiden name and comes from the village of Murzintsi (Murzinci), Cherkasskoi oblasti. That much I know. What interests me, is my family tree before 1830's.

All input is appreciated.

I have found some info as to origins of the name Momot. This name is derived from ancient Slav language and literally translates as "Young". First reference to this name is found in Novgorod records dating 1150(?). I have also noticed that people with this last name are mostly referenced to Poland, with former USSR republics coming close second. Interestingly enough, after analyzing pictures of Momots available on-line, I came to a generalization (right or wrong) that many seem to have darker hair and skin tone. If Momot family origins can be traced to Poland, then I would imagine the specific area to be Silezia, or Tatri/Carpathian region where people are darker.

There are 2 different cities: first is Rostov, second is Rostov-on-Don. First one is in Middle Russia, Second one is in Kuban' (Southern Russia). You may have to find out which city it was for sure. Then if it was a specific village you should be able to locate records. It should be easier if your roots are from Kuban' region, because your ancestors were most likely Kuban' Kossaks. Kossaks military regiments were organized by location of their residency. All Kossak men were enlisted into regiments by default. Thus, you should be able to find good family records.

My ancestors from my father's side were Volga Kossaks (family name = Nosov) and I've visited the family village of Solomatino. There were people there that could still trace our common roots from early 1900's.

Drawn back to backward Russia... SN :)))

They were from Kuban´region. I am sure they were kossaks. Do you know anybody with this surname? I really would like to find good family records. The correct surname is Momotov, not Momot?
Could you send me more informations? Sorry about my English, I speak a little Russian, very little.
Thank you very much or Otim Spacibá!

Momot and Momotov are essentially the same. Momot would be the original root (Young). The next generation may have "ov" added to the ending signifying belonging, in the same way English Steven may become Stevens in the next generation. Thus, you should search for both. Momotov of course should be your priority. Luckily, your search will be simplified due to Russian tradition of giving the farthers first name as a middle name to the children. That should give you one extra generation deep.
In the last 10 years many Kossak Regiments got reinstated. Kuban' Kossaks have an organization that may be of a great help to you. Also there is a archive site that may be of a great help to you: http://www.kubanarchive.ru/#
This site is in Russian exclusively, however you should not have a great problem writing in English or Portuguese, however I would advise you to list the language and encoding in English in the first few lines of you message. Using Unicode maybe the best route. Удачи Вам Госпожа Петрова.

Hello, Thank you for the interesting background information to the name Momot. To add something to the stew - I am also very interested in the name Momot as my maiden name was Momot; my father was Alexander Eovich Momot - his parents came from the Ukraine, they emmigrated to the USA during the Revolution (around 1917-18); from a village near Kiev. He was very blond, not dark haired. Having done a web search on the name Momot, I find links to both Poland and the Ukraine - but more to the Ukraine. I would be very interested in finding any relatives in the USA (I know I have three cousins - who were William Momot's daughters (my father's older brothers). If anyone who knows this branch of the family sees this, please write: wendy.kamdin@quintiles.com, or wkamdin@msn.com.
Thank you!
