Surnames: LINDBERG
I am trying to track records of the LINDBERG families in Fiji. They were seafarers from Sweden and became planters in the Ba area and at one stage Otto LINDBERG was the skipper of a schooner. Apparently Otto married Jane ENRIGHT in Levuka (1872) and a son Michael Victor was born in Varoko 1875. Otto is also believed to have died in Fiji between 1873 and 1877 after which she married (?) Otto's brother Carl. They then came to NZ in 1883. Any help in confirming the BDM's and other information or guidance would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks - Richard.

Dear Richard,
There were a CJ Lindberg and a ? Lindberg both living in Ba in 1873. ? Lindberg would have been male, as females were not included in this list- The Fijian Almanac and Directory 1873.
In 1874 there were Chas J Lindberg and James Lindberg both living in Ba-Turpin's Fijian Nautical and Commercial Almanac and Fiji Directory- 1874.
In the 1874/75 Census of Europeans in Fiji neither of them is included.
In the 1879 Fiji Planting and Commercial Directory CJ Linberg is listed at Ba.

Fiji BDMs date from 1874, so if you can access them on Mormon microfilm you may find something. The Fiji Times newspaper, which began in 1869, has also been microfilmed, but you really need to have some dates before you start looking at a newspaper microfilm.

If you are in NZ, the Fiji BDMs are held at Auckland City Library Research Centre, but can be ordered to other Mormon Family Histoery Centres using the Familysearch website. This can be done in other countries too.

The Fiji Times microfilm are held at the National Library Wellington, and the Massey University Library, Albany, Auckland. There are copies in Australia as well.

Try looking at Trove and Papers Past. A lot of Fiji news was published in both Australia and NZ newspapers.
Christine

Hi Richard,

In case you haven't come across the following book, a C. J. Lindberg from Ba is mentioned a couple of times.

The majesty of colour : a life of Sir John Bates Thurston. Vol 1.: I, the very bayonet by Deryck Scarr.

You can see a preview of it on Google Books:
http://books.google.com.au/books?ei=NWBdT948huOYBabflMkP&...

As you can see from the preview, he was involved with a murder in about Augst 1872. Check the Fiji Times from around that period.

I managed to find an article in the Fiji Times about the murder of one of my ancestors, Achilles Underwood in 1871. So I'm sure they'll be an account of this incident in 1872.

Regards,
Dulcie
