I would like to get any information on the Asays running a shipping business in Ocean County, New Jersey. Does anyone have access to the manuscript: "The Asay Family in Tom's River New Jersey" by Edward G. Asay. According to Chet Asay's research it is a very interesting account. Edward's Grandfather, Charles M. Asay, was the eldest son of "Capt'n Ben Asay." Capt'n Ben and four of his sons ran pleasure and commercial boats on the New Jersey coast. The account starts with Michael Asay born 1788 and married to Phoebe. They had twelve children: William, Barzilla, Thomas, James, Michael, Peter, Henry, Samuel, John, Mary and Elizabeth (twins), and Elwood. Barzilla was born in 1818 and married Achsah Girten. They had six children: Michael Henry, Andrianna, Sarah Jane, John Henry, Pheobe, and Benjamin H. Thank you for any help.

Hi Carole,
It looks like my Grandmother shares ancestors with you. She was was daughter of Howard Jerret Applegate and Anderinna Asay. Anderinna Asay and Achsah Asay were children of Barzilai Asay and Achsah Girton. My information, according to my late Grandmother, is that their family was wealthy and owned and ran a Hotel business on the Jersey shore. Can we share information? Thanks, karen

Hello Carole -

I think we may be related. My grandfather was John Asay, born sometime around 1885, died around 1934. I know he had a brother named Barzilla, and twins in his family. His wife, Laura Clement Asay died in 1927, leaving 4 small children: Elizabeth, Horace, Gertrude Jane and Laura. My mother is Gertrude Jane, and Horace and Laura are still living as well. Have you been able to find the manuscript?

Best,

Helen
