Hello.

I'm looking for any information regarding the parents of Hugh Nisbet, born in Kilmarnock (1824?).

He married Elizabeth Cowan Lambie (in 1844?). they had 8 children.

likely lived in Craigie and/or Mauchline.

thanks

Garth Nisbet

Hello Garth,

I don't know where I found this information, but it could have been on one of the Nisbet history websites.

I have no information on Hugh's parents, however I thought you might be interested in what I found, as you may not have it. Of course because it is off a website you'll need to check the validity.

Hugh Nisbet was born 1824 in Kilmarnock. In 1881 he was living at Ladebrae Farm, Craigie.

He married Elizabeth Cowan Lambie (Lamrie) about 1844 in Craigie. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Lambie and Elizabeth Cowan. She was born May 6, 1816 in Craigie by Lillylaw.

Children of Hugh Nisbet and Elizabeth Lambie are;
1. Robert Lambie Nisbet. B-June 3, 1845 at Glenhall, Mauchline, Ayr.
2. Elizabeth Lambie Nisbet. B-December 30, 1846?
3. John Lambie Nisbet II. B-?

The family may have something to do with the Nisbet's of Cairnhill and The Drum.

Hope this helps. I found them when I was looking for my family who come from Kilmarnock. My gg grandmother, Margaret Grace Nisbet was the daughter of Andrew Nisbet and Ann Byers.

Andrew's parents were Thomas Nisbet (B. abt 1808, Kilmarnock and Jane Laurie (Jean Lawrie,) b. 12 Aug, 1808 Kilmarnock. They married on 17 July, 1829. They had six children from 1831 to 1851. Don't know if my family is related to Hugh.

Cheers,

Lauren.

thanks Lauren. that is very interesting. likely a Nisbet connection there between the two of us in Kilmarnock in the early 1800's. I may have to take a trip to Scotland sometime to try to dig deeper.

Best,
Garth Nisbet

The Scots and Irish used a naming pattern where the first male child is named after the father's father and the second male child after the mother's father with the same pattern followed for the females. Therefore, the parents of Hugh would be Hugh and Agnes. This leads me to the following possibilities:

Hugh m Agnes Stevens 7 July 1820 in Kilmarnock and had female 18 Dec. 1821
male 13 Aug 1823
female 1 June 1825
(Craigie is near Kilmarnock)
or
Hugh and Agnes Hestyr c Hugh 5 Sept 1810 in Ayr (no marriage listed so they could have been married elsewhere and only child listed) I found no other birth/christening for this couple in the Ayrshire Parish records.

Hugh was the son of Hugh Nisbet and Agnes Nisbet (ms Steven), married 3 Jul 1820. He became a widower and remarried Agnes Mitchell, herself a widow. They had three boys, one of whom is my ggfather. Contact on above for further info.

In reply to Q about Hugh, [son of Hugh and Jean (ms Stewart) Nisbet] and Agnes Nisbet, the son was Hugh, born 1823, died 20 June 1890 (GRO). This Hugh is the G.Grandfather of Alan Nisbet, a member of the Australian N/N Soc.

Alan hypothesises that one of the daughters of Hugh and Agnes (ms Steven) Nisbet was named Harriet Nisbet who married William Sharp, Tailor on 12 Dec 1851(OPR) based on the naming patterns as their children who include Hugh Nisbet, b 21Oct 1853 and Agnes Steven b24 Aug 1860.

Alan also believes the other daughter was named Jean Nisbet who married William Morris, Mason 6 Jul 1846 (OPR) and they had a son William b.c 24 Jan 1847 (OPR). This hypothesis is based on the fact that in 1851 Mauchline census has William Morris, 4 years nephew, residing with Jean Nisbet, 52 years, publican. Also listed is Harriot Nisbet, 20 years, niece.

Sometime after the birth of of these three children, Agnes is believed to have died as Hugh marries Agnes Mitchell (ms Walker) and they have three boys,
Robert, b. c 1845, James Stewart, b. c1847 and Thomas b c 1849. Hugh died Mauchline 9 Ap 1861(GRO).

Thomas is my G. Grandfather.

Alan and I believe, based on info to hand, that Hugh Nisbet's brother, Robert married Agnes' sister, Harriot Steven 18 June 1822 (OPR) and that the Harriot previously mentioned in relation to the 1851 census is their daughter.

Robert and Harriet Nisbet's children also include Hugh Steven b. c1824, Jean b. c1826, Thomas Steven b. c1832 and James Stewart b. c1839.
Hope this is helpful.
