In reply to Q about Hugh, [son of Hugh and Jean (ms
Stewart)
Nisbet] and Agnes
Nisbet, the son was Hugh, born 1823, died 20 June 1890 (GRO). This Hugh is the G.Grandfather of Alan
Nisbet, a member of the Australian N/N Soc.
Alan hypothesises that one of the daughters of Hugh and Agnes (ms Steven)
Nisbet was named
Harriet Nisbet who married William Sharp, Tailor on 12 Dec 1851(OPR) based on the naming patterns as their children who include Hugh
Nisbet, b 21Oct 1853 and Agnes Steven b24 Aug 1860.
Alan also believes the other daughter was named Jean
Nisbet who married William Morris,
Mason 6 Jul 1846 (OPR) and they had a son William b.c 24 Jan 1847 (OPR). This hypothesis is based on the fact that in 1851 Mauchline census has William Morris, 4 years nephew, residing with Jean
Nisbet, 52 years, publican. Also listed is
Harriot Nisbet, 20 years, niece.
Sometime after the birth of of these three children, Agnes is believed to have died as Hugh marries Agnes Mitchell (ms
Walker) and they have three boys,
Robert, b. c 1845, James
Stewart, b. c1847 and Thomas b c 1849. Hugh died Mauchline 9 Ap 1861(GRO).
Thomas is my G. Grandfather.
Alan and I believe, based on info to hand, that Hugh Nisbet's brother, Robert married Agnes' sister,
Harriot Steven 18 June 1822 (OPR) and that the
Harriot previously mentioned in relation to the 1851 census is their daughter.
Robert and
Harriet Nisbet's children also include Hugh Steven b. c1824, Jean b. c1826, Thomas Steven b. c1832 and James
Stewart b. c1839.
Hope this is helpful.
