Salter's in Edgefield, South Carolina, 1820

I'm looking for further information on the family of John SALTER, listed in the Edgefield Co, SC Census of 1820. I believe that this man is my 3rd great grandfather.

John G SALTER was born in 1793 (putting him at 27 yrs at the time of the census); which corresponds with the census info. His son, James was born in 1820 (which also corresponds with census info) .

The family migrated into Indiana around 1828, then to Illinois about 1853. Finally settling back in Daviess Co, Indiana somewhere around 1880's.

Can anyone help me?

I have beeen researching the Salter family for many years. There were approximately four John Salter's in the area during the time of which you speak. Spellings of the name vary from Saltar, Salter, Psalter, and Saulter. I would like for us to help each other and maybe I can help you if you can answer a couple of questions. Do you know where your John Salter lived in Edgefield? The maiden name of his wife, his middle name? and any other family name that may have migrated to Indiana with him?

David,
I'm looking for information on 1 Salter in Edgefield. Do you by-chance have any information of the following JOHN Salter:
- 1798 he is mentioned in the probate papers of his wife's father Abdon Ward.

The probate papers of Abdon state:
".... daughter Dorcas Salter, now the wife of John Salter"; it goes-on to mention Dorcas's brothers John Ward & James Ward.

Later, in 1850 I find a Dorcas Salter, dob matching, in the Conecuh County Alabama census but am not sure if it's her or not.

Anything you have on this John Salter would be greatly appreciated.
thanks and sincerely,

I believe that the John Salter you are interested in is John Salter son of James Salter. I also found her in Conecuh County Alabama which is where James Salter's family settled. This John's mother was Ann Partin wife of James. I believe that the Ward's and Salter's were part of a large maigration from Surry County Virginia to Edgefield District South Carolina following the revolutionary war. If you find any additional information on a Salter connection please contact me at salterdavid@bellsouth.net

David, i cant tell for-sure who you're responding to, me or Nancy.

if you're responding to my post:
- the John Salter that married Dorcas Ward lived on the Richland Creek area of Clouds Creek of the Saluda River
- i do not know his middle initial
- his wife's maiden name was Ward

John Salter on Richland Creek had a son John Salter that also lived in that area. John Senior was married to Charity Last name unknown and John Junior was married to (1)Hannnah Eidson and (2) Frances Goodwin Wright. The James and John Salter who was married to Dorcas Ward were located in the Dry Creek area off Mine Creek in Edgefield District. There were four John Salters in Edgefield between 1785 and 1815. After 1800 it appears from the land records that John Salter of Richland Creek was the only Salter of the original four that remained in the area.

It came mostly from carefully reviewing abstracts from wills, land grants, and deeds. I also am acquainted with several of my name swakes in that area and we are able to sort out several of the confusing parts. The main help I got wqas from a fmily of Theopilus Goodwin recorded in the William and Mary genealogy publication in about 1893. When you back before and during the revolution you almost have to rely on luck when finding another family record that referes to yours. James Salter of Dry Creek, father of John married to Dorcas Ward left the area with his family and went to Washington County Alabama and then to Conucuh and Pike and Monroe Counties in Alabama. He was married four timesw and had twenty one off spring. I wish you well in your endeavors.
