I am researching my great great great grandmother Lutisha (Crew) who was a slave to Allen Bradley. Crewsville Plantation was located in the province of Charles City County (Tyler), VA. I have not been able to find any records on the plantation itself. If anyone has any information, please contact.

Hi trscott476
Now,I found a Crewsville Farm and mill located in Hanover Co.Va.The owner was Walter Crew.I found a Shirley Plantation in Charles City,Va.The owner had the largest number of slaves in Va. and they worked on many plantations.
I also found a facegroup site for the surname Crews..perhaps you could find more help and info....just google crews genealogy group facebook.
I'm still trying to find the name of my gggrandparents plantation in harrison Co.Ky.I know they lived on Needmore road.Their name was Thomas Walden.
Hope this helps you.Just type in plantation name and it should pop up.
Elaine

Hi, I reside in nearby New Kent Co, VA & have done research in Charles City Co; the surname is familiar but not the plantation. How did you come upon the plantation name?

Crewsville Plantaion is what's listed on the Charles City geneology site for Lutisha and her family. Lutisha was a slave owned by Allen Bradley. I did an internet search for the Plantation and came across Crewsville Mill which was owned by Quakers and not Allen Bradley.

A mill by that name makes more sense. Charles City Co actually doesn't have any towns/cities. The main plantations: Shirley, Berkeley, Westover, Belle Air, Edgewood, North Bend and Piney Grove at Southall are historical, therefore listed on tourist maps. It had quite a large Quaker community from what I've been told which freed its' slaves and commissioned the VA legislature to free the slaves. The staff at the Charles Co History is very knowledgeable and helpful. If you can contact: info@charlescity.org.

Good luck!

I replied earlier this year and at that time I did come across the name Allen Bradley. If I remember correctly,he was a manager for one of the two mills owned by Walter Crew.
Now,today I looked at info and again see that Walter Crew was the owner of Crewsville Farm and Mills in Hanover Co.Va.
He had two mills on his farm..one known as Auburn Mill and the other Taylor's Creek Mill.
Walter Crew and his family were Quakers and they may have been involved in assisting fleeing slaves via the underground railroad.
I just read an article by Lewis D Savage "The story of a Pioneer Quaker Miller in town". The title is prefaced by the following " Conducting Fugitive Slaves Connections on the Underground Railway : A Salem Iowa and Iowa City Line."
Walter Crew moved from Va. to Iowa hence the connection.
I'm not related but I just help whenever I am fascinated by someone's story!
Now,I don't know if this is the right Crew family.
Good luck.

Wow, that's great shared info. I can't wait to check out that book! Are you on FB? I'm under DaMadSquirrel Jaramogi.

Charles City Co had the largest popoulation of freed slaves in the VA because of the Quakers.
