Lachlan Durant/Joseph Durant

I am trying to find a connection between Lachlan Durant and a Joseph Durant, who was born about 1820, was on the 1850 Walton Co. Fla census, and who later lived around Baldwin Co., AL. He had a son, George Washington Durant b. 1847 called "Wash" who lived in Baldwin Co. most of his life and built the Durant Chapel Church in Crossroads. There is some speculation that Joseph Durant may be a son or nephew of Lachlan. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx.

George was my Great Grand father. I have searched different leads. Some saying Joseph was his dad and some saying Martin was his dad. If you found that Joseph was his dad off of a census that has to be accurate you would think. How would someone go about getting a copy of that census?

Kyle: The census was the 1850 Florida Census, Walton County. I believe the surname on the census was incorrect, listed as Duran, but the spouse and children's names match up. There are several places on the Internet to get copies of the census, try the Florida sites on Rootsweb or Ancestry. We are pretty positive at this point that GWDurant's father was Joseph. He died in the CW in December 1861 while in camp at Spanish Fort, Alabama, of some type of disease. Have been unable to find out his final resting place. Do you live in the south AL area? Shelley

I fixed a Durant Book for my cousin Derek for Christmas a couple of years ago. I still have a lot of the material and I'll go
thru it for you if you'd like. If you like reading for fun (?) you
may want to glance thru "Five Dollars a Scalp" and "Stories of Creek Captives" I'll see if I can get a copy of the Durant
Chapel papers if you'd like. You know Lachlan was named for Lachlan McGillivray who's daughter Sophia married Benjamin Durant (the 1st Durant in this area). If I remember correctly she was a half sister to Alexander McGillivray, the
great spokesman of the Creeks.

I noticed your message regarding Lachlan Durant. I wondered where I might find the material you mentioned on "Creek Captives?" I'm distantly related to L. M. through his sister who married a McIntosh. Thanks.

The two books mentioned "Creek Captives and Other Stories"
"Five Dollars a Scalp" can be found in the Bay Minette Lib
They could send them ILL or I can copy them for you for the cost of the copying. I'd try to get them ILL thru your Library
if possible. You can find additional info by typing the words
"The Creek Families" in on your home page or you can try
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmamcrk4/crkfm2b.html
Just let me know which you will do.

I am interested in the Durants because they are a collateral line of mine. Mary Hall, who married Lachlan Durant, I believe was the sister of Charles Hall, an ancestor of mine. My Hall's ended up in Baldwin County, even to the present, which could account for Joseph's presence there later in the 19th century. Where would I find the articles/books you mention in your email? Thanks, Mary
