Irish research/Holland family

I am looking for a genealogist who has a specialty in the Irish of Indianapolis. The Holland family I am researching arrived in Indianapolis in 1859. John Holland probably worked for a railroad, and the family lived in the Irish Hill area. I am planning a trip to Indianapolis and wonder what repositories will be helpful. Is there a local Irish genealogical group? Names and suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

There are microfilm records at:
Indiana State Library
Genealogy Division
140 North Senate Ave.
Indianapolis, IN 46204
www.statelib.lib.in.us

Actually the Genealogy Division is at the South (Ohio Street) entrance. Microfilm on second floor. The records for the churches in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis are in the Marion county drawer. You would be looking for St John`s records, and possibly St Patrick 1867-68 on. Listings for Holy Cross (Catholic) Cemetery and Crown Hill Cemetery are also in the Marion county drawer.

Thank you, Marilyn and Terry, for your replies. John and Mary (Kirby) Holland had 10 children--all of whom but 2 died by age 22. They are mostly buried at Holy Cross cemetery.

John died in 1890 in what seems to be an accident involving the railway, according to the death certificate. I have not found a news article yet about it. There was apparently no coroner's office at the time (or those records have not been preserved).

What I would like to know is whether they came with other Irish. Four kids were born in Maryland, according to the 1860 census, but I can't figure out where in Maryland. Perhaps other Hollands in Indianapolis were relatives. I would like to find someone who can tell me about the Irish community in the 1850s and 1860s. Is there an Ancient Order of Hiberians with some local records? Which parish is the oldest? Are there records for the railroads--perhaps payroll?

I have been to the State Library. I'm trying to figure out what resources I've missed. I have not had a chance yet to look at naturalizations, so that will be one goal. I'd appreciate any more guidance.

I`ve done a lot of research on Irish in Indianapolis and a lot of research on Hollands, but unfortunately the Hollands I`ve researched weren`t Irish. Below is a possibility for a sister of John Holland. My thought hangs mainly on the point that Timothy Holland was appointed guardian and executor of the estate 29 Jun 1881. As I understand it your Timothy died 12 Dec 1881. On 16 Feb 1882 John Holland was appointed administrator and guardian. Could just be a coincidence, but might be worth you looking at. I saw another article on Mary Holland Daly`s lawsuit, but didn`t type because it was long. It was an appeal to the Indiana Supreme Court by the insurance company on the grounds that her husband drank to excess. If I am reading it correctly she won there too because the court said that although her husband was known to drink, that wasn`t involved at the time of his death. Let me know if you need the article.

Wow, Terry! You have done an awful lot of research on those Irish Hollands, whether you knew it or not. Unfortunately, I did not see your post until today--after spending the past 5 days in Indianapolis. My research turned up Mary Holland and Eugene Daly in the records of St. John Catholic church. But I wasn't sure if she was related to my John Holland. (There are multiple John Hollands in Indianapolis, and most Holland females are named Mary.)

The probate and deeds suggest that John might have been Mary's brother. I have been looking for immigration records without success.

I'm not sure how Timothy fits in to all this. He was a son of John A. and died at the age of 22.

Do you live in Indianapolis? Where do Hollands fit into your family tree? I have more questions and would like to see that article. Rather than having you type it, perhaps you could mail a copy to me.

Please contact me directly at Icedancer_sjm at msn.com.

I'm happy to share what I have on my (husband's) Holland line.

Thanks so much for the information--it's a gold mine!

Stephanie
