Roby Orilla (Sanders) Hitchcock married a John Jones June 10th, 1874 after her first husband Elmore Hitchcock died in 1870. Roby died less than a month later on July 3, 1874. Her death records burned in the fire in 1911, but I was wondering if anyone had info on this John Jones. He signed Roby's autograph book around 1866, but I have no clue about how old he was or where he was born or what happened to him after Roby died. Roby's death is a mystery. I would like to know what happened to her and perhaps his line of descendants might have that info. Help! Roby lived in White Oak, El Dorado, CA during two different census and was born abt 1850.

I am just an amateur genealogist who lives here in El Dorado County and am interested in the history of the county. I thought if I could find where Roby was in 1866 when Jones signed her autograph book, I might be able to trace him. I wondered why Jones did not take Roby's children when she died. I found her two girls, Clara and Ida, with the Bennett family in 1880. Then in a history book of the county, I found a bio. of David Bennett, that said, "His (Bennett's) second marriage was on the 8th day of May, 1870 to Mrs. Saunders, widow of Charles Saunders, of Latrobe." So this leads me to believe that the Saunders family lived in Latrobe in 1866, so I will search there for Jones

All the conclusions you've drawn have been correct. I've tried some of the searching you propose to do and either haven't found any John Jones, or have found too many John Jones and no way to identify which one is the right one! Many of the kids who signed Roby's autograph book lived in Mud Springs, one in Colusa, Folsom and Michigan Bar, but most in Latrobe. I decend from Lucy Ann Nichols Sanders Bennett through her dau. Roby and Roby's dau. Ida.
===Update====
I went back to my big binder for the Sanders family and reread the hard to read writing and found a least a clue about John Jones. It stated that he was 31 years old at the time of his marriage to Roby in 1874, making him born abt. 1843 In the 1860 census there is a John Jones of that age from Upper Placerville. Could be the man! I will continue to look....
Thanks for inspiring me!

Hi Patty,

I am descended from Chauncy & Lucy Sanders through their son Edward. I have quite a bit of family information, but unfortunately none about John Jones. My great uncle also has pictures of the family, which I am hoping to get copies of someday!

Would love to talk further. I am excited about the autograph book as I am wondering if her parents/brother/sisters signed it as well!

Juliette,

My email address is tompatty@prodigy.net
I would be very glad to tell you whatever I know and I have just a few pictures that I would be glad to scan for you.

I can also send you the transcript of the autograph book for you to decipher. (I need to look around for it tho' so don't hold your breath.)

So glad to find a cousin, however distant! How can we persuade your great uncle to share his photos?

Take care,
Patty in San Diego
