de Chabert

I am seeking information on the Huguenot de Chabert family who I have been told lived in Martinique during the 1700s and did well especially towards the end of the period. This was when Martinique sugar gained from the American Revolution and the end of the British embargo. Some colored descendants moved to St Croix around 1800 it is said anecdotaly in the face of animosity towards gens de coleur caused by the Haitian Revolution.

Although my maiden name is de Chabert and my father was from
Puerto Rico, I know little of the family. My grandfather's father was supposedly from Denmark, and flew the Danish flag over his farm during the Spanish American War when General
Nelson Miles invaded the island. My father thought that 4 brothers had emigrated from Denmark in the early 1800's, and
that one had gone to Haiti, one to St. Croix, one to New
Orleans, and one (his great-grandfather) to Puerto Rico.
We thought the black branch of our family in St. Croix had
come there from Denmark. Supposedly there is a Caribbean Collection at the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Croix, recently endowed by Dr. Ralph de Chabert, which is collecting records of the Danish immigration and the slave
records. You might find some information there. I'd be interested in any replies you may have received.

Thanks for the information. Someone told me there was also a pamphlet available about the family history in St. Croix. If I track it down, I will try to let you know.

How exciting to hear that you have so much information on the family. I don't know what more I can tell you about my connection to the family. As I mentioned in my original posting, I am the daughter of Alfred A. de Chabert from Puerto Rico (Rio Piedras), whose father was William A. de Chabert, also from Puerto Rico (Carolina), whose father was August A. de Chabert (lived in Carolina and was the census recorder for the Martin Gonzalez neighborhood of Carolina in the 1910 census) the son of William de Chabert from Denmark. We are somehow related to the de Chaberts currently living in St. Croix (probably 6th cousins?) but we aren't clear on the exact relationship. Possibly the last-mentioned William was a son of Charles Texier de Chabert, but this is not clear. You may contact me at stanbro@ix.netcom.com if you prefer.
Thanks for any information you would like to share,
Helen F. de Chabert Stanbro

How wonderful to find information about the Dechaberts! I am one of the descendants of the Dechaberts who went to Haiti. My family is now in the U.S. My grandfather was a Dechabert, though he changed his last name to his middle name, Victor. His name was Brice Victor Dechabert. I've heard the story from my grand aunt about how her father Ernest? Dechabert moved to Haiti from the Virgin Islands to work in Haiti for the Danish government. I do have a picture of him. I can attach it later. My cousins and I have been trying to find more information and connection for some time, to no avail. Which is why I am absolutely thrilled to find some connection. Funny enough, we also have family in Puerto Rico, but relatives of my grandmother. If you would like to send me an email, you can get in touch with me at wynvic@msn.com Thank you for sending an email. It was a nice surprise. All the best.
