Hi, I am a Norwegian now living in Australia. I am married to a lady from Tuvalu – and our son was almost named Laban after one of my wife’s anchestors – Peter Laban (but that name does not go well in Norway – it means rascal and is also the name of a jellybean!). Peter Laban was from Denmark. He was the manager of the German kopra plantation on Nukulaelae in Tuvalu – before he and his Tuvaluan wife Samilia moved to Samoa (some time after 1863). He had a son named William and a daughter named Emma (my wife’s name is Emma – she obviously had her name from Peter Laban’s daughter, in Tuvalu they spell Emma with one m). William moved, as far as I have been able to trace, to Australia – close to where we are living now!
Winnie Laban, the NZ-minister, is also related to Peter Laban. It is interesting to read that Dough in USA is the son of a Jack Siaki Laban. Siaki is the name of my wife’s uncle in Tuvalu – obviously also after (Jack) Peter Laban.
I have just been doing some more research on my wife’s family – that how I came across you on the internet (http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.laban/7/mb.ashx).

Talofa Ian,

My name is Christina Laban and I live in Wellington, NZ. My father's name is David Laban, son to Jack Laban, who is the son of Fred Laban who is the 6th child of 15 sibblings born to William Laban who married Ioka Fata from Afega. William Laban was the son to Peter Jacob Laban the Danish trader/pharmacist who married Samila Jacob a part Tuvaluan and part European woman.

It appears that all who have posted messages/responses to your search are related in one way or another. Its awesome to make the contection.

Just wondering, whether all who have posted responses are decendants of Peter Jacob (D.O.B. 1840) and Samila Laban (of Tuvalu)?

I look forward to your responses, please feel free to email me on christinal-nz@hotmail.com.

Fa'afetai

Greetings,

My name is Jennifer Laban Toailoa. My great grand-father's name is William Laban. William Laban from my understanding was a German man. Married to Bertha Yandall from what I was told. William and Bertha had 15 children. Their 14th son was my grandfather Jack Laban. Their youngest son was Douglas Laban. I was fortunate enough to visit Apia several years back and was able to meet him in person. I to would like to know more about my great grandparents. From what I was told we have German and Irish blood. I reside in Sacramento, California. My father's name is Jack Peter Laban. His siblings are Herbert, Henry, Joe, Margaret, Elizabeth, Winniefred adopted brother Manu'a. We all reside in the United States. To my understanding my grandfather married an American Samoa young lady, hence I believe this is how we all made it to the States. I believe our great grandparents village is in Levile, Apia in Samoa. I've visited there. Please pass on in other information to me. I am married and have 4 children. I would like to pass this info down to them as well. God bless and good luck as we all search for answers.
