I have run into brick walls with various branches of my Family Tree.
Thomas Collins was a Sailor from Leith who married a Jean Burt 21 March 1791. George Blyth m Mary Pride and had a Son Charles b.21 Feb 1829. Mary Finlayson was b.18 Jan 1790 and d.9 April 1870. Isabella Miller was b. 1824 and d.19 July 1874. Jean Arkley m John Finlayson and their daughter was Mary 1790
I have found most of the B.D.M. occurred in the Leith and Canongate districts.
Any help would be appreciated. Ken Burling

I read with interest about your George Blyth.
My tree is back to Walter Blyth who m. Margaret Pate in 1792 in South Leith. The only son that I know of is John who m.Jane Banantine in 1818 in Edinburgh parish. They had several children, the oldest of whom is my direct line-Walter who left and went to South Shields in NBL, where he married and stayed. He was a mariner so presumably went from Leith.
What I find interesting is that his oldest son was George. This is the 1st mention of the name in the family, and there were none no Georges on his wife's side.
So could your George be the younger brother of my John??
In Edinburgh they were in Edinburgh Parish, St Cuthberts,Leith and one daughter m. in Cannongate.
Cheers, Betty.

I am looking for the family of Andrew FINLAYSON who came to Australia in 1842. He was born circa 1815 in "Scotland" and his father was a gardener named Robert.

Andrew could have had the middle name HUNTER and therefore a connection with that surname is likely.

Thank you

Hi

You've probably got this info but it might be of use if you haven't. 1841 census shows that the Blyth family were born outwith Edinburgh.
1841 Census

Piece: SCT1841/685 Place: Edinburgh -Midlothian Enumeration District: 5
Civil Parish: Edinburgh Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: St John's
Folio: 91 Page: 3
Address: 50 Cowgate, Baillies Court

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
BLYTH George M 45 Labourer Outside Census County (1841)
BLYTH Mary F 45 Outside Census County (1841)
BLYTH Charles M 12 Apprentice Tailor Outside Census County (1841)
BLYTH Mary F 9 Outside Census County (1841)

I found these on IGI
Thomas Collins and Jean Burt children Thomas 22/12/1794 and James 15/08/1792

Geo Blyth and Mary Pride children
Mary 1826 Newton Midlothian
James 1823 Newton
Margt Torrance Blyth 1832 Newton
Charles 1829 Newton
Nasmyth (female) 1835 Cockpen Midlothian

I think I found Charles Blyth on 1851 census and it states that he's married. There's a good chance that Jane Blyth 2yrs could be his daughter.

Charles Blyth is also on 1861 and 71 census living in Canongate but his birthplace is written as Newington! Not sure if it's the same one though. There's also a death of Charles Blyth in 1853 Canongate but don't know who he is
There is also a marriage of Charles Blyth to Isabella Miller in 1847 Invesk and Musselburgh

1851 Census

Piece: SCT1851/685 Place: Canongate -Midlothian Enumeration District: 35
Civil Parish: Canongate Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 744 Page: 6 Schedule: 28

Hello June. Thanks for that the info looks good .I will check on that now .My. Isabella Millar father was jonathon miller mother Agnes Johnstone from lieth ,sisters jean and Robina .We lost all trace of Isabella and Jean whilst Robina was our connection , she being our ggggrandmother having a child with aJames Allan but we do not know which one ,although we are getting closer .Hence the reason we are looking at other avenues .

The millers left lieth and lived in Ormiston and Pencaitland ,there is also a John miller who vanishes around as well but we think he is also in Edinburgh living with Allan's again have to prove it is the correct Allan family . Once again Thanks Richard.
