Please note that a problem of Czech abc can be hidden in the name Kadan.
The name of town in west Bohemia is Kadaň. (code Win1250).(There is a small hook above "n". It marks soft pronunciation of n. It is difficult to do for English speaking people (with the hot potatoe in their mouth) but: try to say "n" using of a middle of your tangue and don´t touch anything with the end of it.

My grandmother's name was Barbara Kadan . She lived in Baltimore for a while and then moved to Kent Island when she married my grandfather Joseph Severa in 1896. She had at least 1 sister named Josephine who died in in <anteno Illinois in 1963. My granmother was born in Bohemia aroound 1871. Josephine was born in1879. My grandmother was dead long before I was born ans my father died when I was 28, brfore I was interested in any of this. I believe there were other siblings as I have many Victorian calling cards with names like Sluter and Taroslav. When in the Maryland archives looking over the records of St. Wenchaslas church in Baltimore I did find a record of a Kadan marriage there. The Severas went there as did most of the Czeck immigrants. I don,t know about any Jewish roots, however.

I just as you am interested in the information about the origin of our uncommon surname.
I will be extremely grateful for any comments on the subject. My ancestor came from Kaishovka village Grodno region, Belarus, where this surname is spread among peasant orthodox Christian population. My search in Internet revealed that the bearers of this surname are mostly of Jewish origin, though I am unfortunately not, more exactly know nothing about it.
Perhaps it will be interesting for you to know, that one of Mongol military leaders, grandson of Tengiz Khan, had the name Kadan. He acted in the Eastern Europe, particularly

There is a small town in Lithuania named Kadan
