Hi
I am descended from James Hammett - he was actually 'married' 3 times but not shown on census as such.
1. Harriet Gibbons - Samuels mother( 1of 5)
2. Charlotte Daniels- Williams mother(1 of 2)
3. Ann Frampton married in 60's

Please E mail if you need any further info - I have been researching for about 6 months.

Hello from South Dorset I'm just tracing back the GIBBONS family line my great grandfather was Jacob Gibbons of the TITANIC fame who was married to Lottie Pucket of Tolpuddle ..her mother was Jane Hammett born 1844 .Somewhere its written that Lotties Uncle (or great) was James Hammett and the fact that his first wife was Harriet Gibbons makes it all the more confusing! If you know if James had a brother William who was a builder then I think thats where the line is but at the moment it could be either way or even both .

My mother was born BUGLER and lived at Hill Bottom, near Worth Mattravers. Her grandfather (my great grandfather on her mother's side) was named OLIVER (sorry, don't know his given name) and it is reputed in the family that he was the illegitimate son of James Hammett. Don't know if that is any help to you. My late cousin, Ralph Jordan, who was onetime mayor of Guildford in Surrey, was featured in a local newspaper article beside the grave of Mr Hammett, and there may have been more information available in that article (sorry, I don't have it). Sorry this family isn't connected to James Hammett TPM - seems this tale came from granny talking about a tea-pot etc.

William Hammett, the builder, was a cousin of James Hammett, the Tolpuddle Martyr. I am descended from Richard Hammett, who was William's brother. Together, they built the Methodist Chapel in Tolpuddle. They also built 12 or 13 houses, on the same plot of land, at "Hammett Close". In the early days, all of those houses were occupied by Hammett's, or close friends of Hammett's. James Hammett, the Tolpuddle Martyr, lived in one of those houses, after he returned from transportation. The Methodist Chapel deeds can be seen at the Dorchester Records Office.

I also have Tolpuddle Lovelace's in my family tree. I am not directly descended from the Tolpuddle Martyr Lovelace's, but from their close relatives.

If anyone is interested, I can search out more details about any of this. I researched this stuff in the census records, at the London Records Office, some years ago. I have the results, somewhere, in the back of one of my filing cabinets.
