Hi:

I am a direct descendent of Col. James Smallwood (born in 1639 in Middlewich, England) . I have noticed that there are some entries for the same man which put his date of birth in something like 1645. But he is the same man who settled in Charles County, MD, and was the great-grandfather of Major General William Smallwood (Smallwood's Maryland Regiment in the Rev. War), who was later the fourth governor of Maryland.

My name posts on this board as Roberts, but that was due to my grandfather (James Thomas Smallwood) marrying my grandmother under the assumed name of Roberts. My dad ended up with Roberts on his birth certificate, consequently. I go by Smallwood-Roberts now.

I am starting a family tree called Descendents of Col. James Smallwood, and will give editing ability to any descendents so that they can add their history to it. Hopefully, this has not been done already. Anyone who wants to add to it need only e-mail me and explain your connection.

No, that is a different John Thomas. My grandfather was born in 1883. That James Thomas does not seem to fit into my branch, and I am sure that I am not directly related to him unless through one of my grandfather's siblings, or perhaps one of his earlier children. He did not have any children named after himself.

Hi RichardI..I, too, am a direct descendant of Col. Smallwood. I have his birth year down as 1639 as well, with him getting married in 1665 to Hester Evans (Charles Co. Maryland) and passing Sept. 16, 1714 in Prince George Co. Send me your email and I can send you my lineage...Tracie

Dear Richard,

I run a one-name Smallwood site, currently largely focused on the UK but hoping to pull together all strands of research relating to the name, at www.bedfordpark.net/genealogy/smallwood. You'll see that I have a reference to the ubiquitous Col. James tree and am in contact with a number of descendants, but pressures of time haven't allowed me to attempt a fuller exposition and a reconciliation of the many (often conflicting) versions. I think what you're attempting is a great idea, and I'd be very happy to include a description of your project on the website and link to any related web pages you've set up yourself. Hopefully this will help to direct more descendant researchers in your direction. Please contact me directly if you're interested in discussing this further.

Best wishes,

Ian Hall (London, England

Dear Richard,
Blan(d)ford researchers have a mystery that we haven't been able to solve. As a new Maryland Smallwood researcher comes on line I ask them this question.
A Maryland Blan(d)ford (name unknown) married a Maryland Smallwood(name unknown). They had a son "George" in 1806. In 1816 they immigrated to Kentucky.
In 1882, in George's obit, it stated that his mother was a daughter of Major Smallwood, the Regimental Commander of the Marylanders at the Battle of Long Island.
The commander of that Regiment was your kin, William, later Major General, then, Governor. However it seems that William never married.
That leaves me with:
A. She was an illegitimate child of William, or
B. She was a Maryland Smallwood daughter whose family tradition gave her father more fame that he earned, but he was part of the Marylanders at Long Island.
If you can help me out---great!!! If you don't have an answer, keep me in mind when you eventually stumble across it.
Regards, Jim Blandford

Jim.
I see what you are talking about. General william Smallwood was never married and had no children. Now i will double check to see if he might have had a cousin or relative in the regiment under him. Officers back then would have staff members who were family along with their other headquarters personnel. I have a large portrait of the General on my den wall, and a friend in Maryland sent me pictures of his home and grave. One of the stories about him was that if had married he would have had to give up part of his inheritance to his sister if she was still single. She later married after he died. One other thing, their were a lot of William's in the Maryland Smallwood's so her father still could have been a William. Don't lose hope, Keep hope alive !, Maybe I will find something.
Terry
