Bob,
Give me some details for Eunice HOBBY and her husband Daniel BAKER (such as birth, marriage, & death dates, places more specific than Putnam Co, NY), and I might be able to locate some parentage on her.

Hi Bob,

Not sure if this will make it to you as this is an old post I'm replying to.

My GG Grandfather was Joseph Hobby Baker. He was married to Veronika Bisch Baker. He died in Brooklyn July 13, 1901 and is burried in Fishkill cemetery, Dutchess county, NY. His death certificate shoes his Father's name as Daniel Baker, born in Putnam county and Mother, Eunice Hobby born in NY State. I was wondering if this ties in to any of the Bakers / Hobbys you have been researching?

Yes, Joe,
I have your Daniel Baker and Eunice Ophelia Knapp Hobby in my data base. I had nearly nothing on your "Joseph Hobby Baker", though, just "Joseph H." I'm no kin, but my father-in-law was a descendant of Benjamin Baker, and I input yours as a possible clue.

Here are my notes on your Daniel Baker, who I have not been able to trace further:
1850 Census South East 331-345. Daniel Baker 50 farmer NY; Unis 44 NY; Joseph H. 16 laborer; Stephen 14.

1860 Census South East 255-271. Daniel Baker 59 agent $3000 $150 NY; Eunice K. 54 CT; Stephen 24 bakery NY.

1870 Census South East 310-246. Daniel Baker 69 Assist in Pev? NY; Eunice 55 CT; Stephen 36 keeps feed store NY; Martha 29 CT; Daniel 2 NY; Infant dau 1 NY.

1874, 8 Feb. Putnam Co. Old Estates, Vol. C. #2115. Alfred Bailey died at South East 8 Feb 1874. No will. Petitioner Daniel Baker of South East, who is guardian of James H. Baily, Ida M. Baily and Emma Baily, his children, all minors. 26 Mar. 1874.

1880 Census South East p.141C. Stephen Baker 44 NY;; Martha M. wife CT CT CT; Daniel son 23 NY NY CT; Percy son 11 NY NY CT; Daniel Baker father 88 NY NY CT; Josie Foster servant other 24 NY NY CT.

My family's Benjamin Baker was born in 1780 in Westchester Co., and died 7 Nov 1852. His wife was Elizabeth Wilson (also untraced), b. 1781 in Westchester Co., died aft. 1860. Their known children are Charlotte Jane Baker b. Sep. 1817 and Hart Baker b. Dec 1824. Charlotte Jane Baker married Thomas O. Ganun and they lived in Southeast, Putnam, NY. I believe that Benjamin's parents were Samuel Baker and Mary Palmer. Benj. and Elizabeth may have had other children. My notes on Benjamin name a Stephen Baker in North Salem, so you might be interested:

If Thomas Baker who died 1840-44 in New Castle is related to THIS Benjamin, he is either his father by an earlier wife than Catherine See, or he is Benjamin's BROTHER.

Dayroll of the N. Salem, Westchester Co. School, 1800. The school was near the house of Stephen Baker in North Salem beginning in Mar 22 1799 and ending 21 Mar 1800. Scholars' names and No. of days of attendance: Hannah Baker 222; Orris Baker 219; Polly Baker 182; Hannah Baker 113; John Baker 99; Benjamin Baker 73; William Baker 70; Ephraim Baker 39; Albert Baker 26. Trustees were Nathan Brown and Stephen Baker.

1810 Census North Salem, p. 1045. Benjamin Baker 1 male 26-45; 4 females under 10; 1 female 26-45. Next door to Thomas Baker 26-45 and family. (In 1816, Thomas Baker of N. S. bought 12 acres in N.S. from Horace and Thirza Baker of N.S., and in 1850, Thomas Baker of N. S. sold 12 acres to Stephen Baker for $1.)

1820 Census in Carmel, Patterson.

1841. Vol. 94, p. 146. Thomas and Sarah Carpenter of Somers sold to Benjamin Baker of Somers, $1000 for 15 acres, town not stated. OURS?

1843. Benjamin Baker and Joseph Baker of Patterson witnessed will of Eli Crosby of Patterson whose will was dated 6 Apr 1843, filed 7 Jun 1843. (wife Maria; sons Thomas, James; daus Ellen Crosby, Martha J. Crosby, Harriet Crosby, Laura M. Crosby (all under 21), Sally B. Gerow, and Charlotte Johnson.)

1850 Census, South East 232-243, Benjamin Baker 70 farmer NY, Elizabeth wife 69 NY, next door to Thomas Owens Ganung and wife Charlotte Jane Baker Ganung.

1852, 7 Nov. Funerals of Elder Nathaniel Robinson. Fun. of (this?) Benjamin Baker - died in Zacheus Henion's barn. Fun. in school house.

Dear Joe--
My brother Bob died last year (2011). He'd done most of the Baker line,
Hobby line too, which of course went back in Ct. to early 1600's (7 proprietors of Greenwich ct).

Now we know the Bakers came from Barnstable Mass. Quakers with big families, esp. Stephen of North Salem.
I'm from Ephraim, Stephen, Daniel, Stephen, Horace, Dorothy.
I'd met the other Baker line who went to Oregon and California in mid 1800's.

If you are still nosing about with these folks,
I can eventually send what I have.

your (distant) cousin Al

Could you look through your data base for a Letitia BAKER, the fourth wife of Daniel ROGERS who died 26 May 1852, buried in Beacon. She is not listed in the 1850 census where he is found living in the residence of son Samuel. I do not know if BAKER was her maiden name or if she was a widow, but she was not the mother of any of his children. His third wife, Zilpha BARRETT, was from Putnam county and they had land there.

Sorry recent responders, none seem to match our files for
the Ephraim, Stephen, Daniels Stephen Horace & Percy line./

Percy was superintendant of Ellis Island (US Imm. Sernow) in 1930
(census).
