JOSEPH HENRY LEWIS (s/o John and Sarah Lewis) b. Sydney River, Cape Breton Co., Cape Breton, NS ca. 1889, m. Amherst, Cumberland Co., NS 21DEC1912 MARGARET (MAGGIE) MAY STEWART (b. Wallace Harbour? (Victoria), NS 11NOV1892 (15NOV1892 in 1901, ca. 1891)), d. Gill St., South Devon (Fredericton) St. Mary’s Parish, York Co., NB 7FEB1938 age 45 years, 2 months and 26 days, d/o Capt. Charles and Mary Jane (Thomson) Stewart.
Joseph was a plumber for the C.N.R. Maggie’s death record gives her parents as ‘John’ and _____ (‘Thompson’) Stewart.
Charles Stewart b. Fox Harbour ca. 1838, s/o James and Catherine Stewart, m. Wallace, Cumberland Co., NS 23NOV1875 Mary Jane Thomson (b. ca. 1857), d/o William and Mary Jane Thomson.
In Wallace, Cumberland Co., NS in 1881 were Charles (46) and Mary J. (25) Stewart with John (2) and Kate (NOV1880). Charles was a mariner.
In Wallace, Cumberland Co., NS in 1891, Charles (50) and Jane (34) Stewart had John H. (12), Catherine A. (11), William H. (9), Mary E. (5), Peter (4) and Lucinda (2). Charles’ parents were from Scotland. He was a pilot. Everyone else was b. NS. Lucinda Elizabeth Stewart m. 14DEC1912 Walker Timothy Carter.
In Wallace in 1901 Mary (16JUN1857) was a widow with John (13OCT1878) Stewart as head-of-household. John’s siblings were Catherine (18NOV1880), William (8SEP1882), Mary (31OCT1887), Lucinda (22AUG1889, Maggie (15NOV1892), Henrietta (28DEC1894) and ‘Ivea’ (29JUN1899). A brother-in-law was John William McLean (4JUL1874) with a son, ‘Charly’ McLean (22APR1900). I am not sure how John William McLean was a ‘brother-in-law’.
In Middleboro, Cumberland Co., NB in 1911, ‘May’ (JUN1857) has apparently remarried 12OCT1903 to Cyrus (David Cyrus, JAN1858, 1JAN1856 in death record) Roblee and in their blended family are Ivy ‘Steward’ (JUN1898) and Aletha ‘Steward’ (APR1907); described as step daughters.
In Devon (Fredericton), St. Mary’s Parish, NB in 1921 there was a Joseph Lewis b. NS ca. 1889 and his wife, Margaret (b. NS ca. 1894). Joseph was a plumber. Her father was given as b. Scotland; which may or may not be true. With them was a Doris Roblee (12), given as an ‘adopted daughter’.
‘Dorris’ Roblee (transcribed as ‘Robler’) b. Springhill, Cumberland Co., NB ca. 1909, d/o Howard and Minnie (Stewart) Roblee, m. the Baptist parsonage, Springhill, Cumberland Co., NS 3AUG1927 Orland (Orlando?) Wood (b. Oxford, Cumberland Co., NS ca. 1907), s/o William S. and Bertha (Crawford) Wood. Howard Roblee b. Streets Ridge ca. 1882, s/o Cyrus and Margaret Roblee, m. Streets? Ridge, Cumberland Co., NS 2NOV1904 Minnie ‘Stuart’ (b. North Wallace, Cumberland Co., NS ca. 1884), d/o Charles and Mary Jane ‘Stuart’. In Springhill, in 1911, Howard (NOV1882) and Minnie (AUG1885) Roblee had Charles (OCT1906) and Doris (OCT1908).
Edith Carvell Roblee b. South Victoria, NS ca. 1907, daughter of Howard and Minnie Eliza (Stewart) Roblee, who m. St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 16NOV1938 John Edmond Wood (b. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 20OCT1910), s/o Francis (Frank) LeBaron and Bertha (Moore) Wood.
This creates several mysteries. It appears that Minnie b. ca. 1884/AUG1885 was Margaret May Stewart’s sister. The closest match is Mary E. Stewart (ca. 1886/31OCT1887), but the birth-dates are a bit off. Not that unusual, but still troubling. Also, in 1911, Howard and Minnie do not have a daughter, Edith or any daughter b. ca. 1907. I cannot help but wonder whether Althea, in 1911, and Edith are not the same person.
Maggie is supposedly buried in Sunny Bank Cemetery in Devon, but she is not listed as buried there. Possibly the transcription of headstones is incomplete. One site only goes to surnames beginning with ‘K’.
