Researching John Bungo b 1870 arrived 1883-1893 and Mary Kozitsky b. 1883(Kuzitsky)(Kazickie)(Kuzinsky)arrived 1901. 1910 Census shows birth for both Austria/Slovenia with language of Slovenia. Both lived in Clearfield Cty, Pa.
1920 Census shows birth for both as Austria, language Slovak. 1930 Census shows birth for John as Yugoslavia and Mary as Austria with language as Croation. Family was Byzantine Catholic...but were told they were Ukranian. I am not sure which country to begin researching. I did not find a ship manifest for John Bungo, did find a Mary Kuzitsky as possible match.

Can you provide more information on Mary Kuzitsky as possible match? Any other US documents on these ancestors?
I would take the 1930 census information to be just a bit more correct. So they were from former Yugoslavia. As far as I know Croats and Slovenes are Roman Catholic and Serbs are Serbian Orthodox. Since you say they were Byzantine Catholic than they were Ruthenian (Rusyn). Neither of your ancestral surnames strike me as being from former Yugoslavia.
How are these BUNGOs in SSDI connected to your ancestor?
METRO BUNGO 07 Oct 1911 Oct 1976 16830 (Clearfield, Clearfield, PA ..
MARY BUNGO 28 Jan 1908 Dec 1978 16681 (Smokerun, Clearfield, PA ...
LOIS J BUNGO 01 Dec 1928 20 Oct 2002 (V) 16666 (Osceola Mills, Clearfield, PA) ...

From what documents did you locate Mary (Maria's) surname
Kuzitsky)(Kazickie)(Kuzinsky).

I have Mary's birth as 1883 based on census. Only Wasco Bungo in your list is from this branch of the family. He is Mary's son. (Unfortunately, there are a million John & Mary Bungo's in Pa.) I have a possible match with a ship manifest matching her stated arrival on the census. Spelling there is Kuzitsky. I have a newspaper obituary from Clearfield Cty, Pa, showing her brothers spelling their name as Kazickie (which I guess the other spelling would be an attempt at a phonetic interpretation). Dept of Health Ohio deaths for Mary's daughters Catherine & Mary show mother's maiden name as Kuzinski and my inlaws told me the name was Kozitski.
If the ship manifest is a match, it states hometown as Solima which is in Galicia, Austria which would match with the Rusyn ancestry and may possibly now be in Czechoslovakia. I have no leads on the Bungo arrival from Austria as his birthdate is arbitrarily 1870 or 1871 (census can be off a year) and arrival date on one census says 1893 and on another says 1883, plus again there are a million John Bungo entries or variations as the name may have originally been Bunga or Bunka. Also states Austria which again could be Galicia.
Any additional info you might have would be most appreciated!!

You do not have any US document on Mary (Maria) to give you her place of birth? Once we know her place of birth figuring out a correct spelling of her surname, much easier.

What else does 1930 census say? Na-naturalized; Al-alien or Pa-first paper? If naturalized than you should request his naturalization intent and petition. If he was not naturalized but lived pass 1940 than an Alien Registration Form. If John and Mary married in US than their state marriage application and church marriage record should have their place of birth.

It would seem that most of the BUNGAs that arrived thru Ellis Island were from Wetlina/Wetlyna etc.
Bunza, Halia Wetlina, Austria 20 1891 1911
Beniga, Anna Vetlina 15 1884 1899 (surname is BUNGA)
Wetlina: village with 327 inhabitants in Podkarpackie wojewodztwo.

Solina is North of Wedlina:

If this is the location then post a query on Galicia's and Poland's Ancestry board.

Thanks for all your help. The links are wonderful. I especially enjoyed the Polish accent site. I will check with the few remaining Bungo family members. I have no official church records of any kind, other than what I can find on ancestry.com. I guess a trip to a LDS Family History is in order, though I'd have to read on how to research there.
