Hertel or Weiss

Posey County Indiana: Looking for info on George Hertel who married Mary Elizabeth Weiss. George was born abt. 1851. I am looking for more on him and his family. There is a rumor that he may have been openly adopted into the Hertel family--his sister having married a Hertel and him having been orphaned by his parents death. He may have actually been a Jost. This is just a rumor. He died 1/27/1926. Mary Elizabeth Weiss (wife) was born abt. 1858--died 1/12/1944. More info on her and her family is likewise desired. It is thought that George had a brother Sebastian. George is a man with no beginning and I hope to close the loop. Any help would be most appreciated!

To Frank Hertel, Posey County, IN

I am trying to trace my family back to Europe. The first generation is said to be Sebastian Hertel, married to Anna Marie Kindler, who settled in Wisconsin in the mid-1800s. Do not know dates, but their son died in 1934. Sebastian may have emigrated from Alsace Lorraine. Could this be the Sebastian who was brother to your George?

Regards, Bob Hertel

Dear Bob:

I don't know if we are the same line are not. What I will do is send you my data that is generated in Family Tree Maker. There are about 1,200 names. My line seems to have come from the area you named although I too run into a brick wall in the 1850 time frame with the Hertel name.

I don't think that I can attach a file to this response but I will attach the data file to a separate Email to you. As I understand it, the Family Tree Maker data file is a standard file that most Tree programs will accept. The file has the name of koch.ftw . This name was used because I could trace the Koch name (my mother's name) back further than the Hertel name.

Please feel free to write back if I can be of further help--I'll do what I can.

Possibility?

There is a possibility that my Mary Elizabeth Weiss and your Mariam Margaret Weiss are somehow related. Both are from the Posey Co. / Saint Wendel area. I'll have to do some checking (which for me will take some time). Check this response site from time to time to see if I get lucky.
Thanks for responding!

I have a Margaret Weis (daughter of George Weis and Pauline Kohl) married to Urban Hack in my database. They were married 24 Nov 1866 at St. James Church, Gibson Co., IN. I understand that the Hack (Heck) family lived at Martins Station, IN. I'm not sure which county that is in. It could be Posey, Vanderburgh, or Gibson. The three counties meet around there somewhere. I have been trying unsuccessfully to learn something about Urban Hack. I show 8 children for them: Anna Barbara, Maria Anna Magdalena, John, Katherine N., Anna Magdalena, Louisa, George, and Theresa.

I think it was Posey County, but am not sure of that. .Urban Hack was buried in Opolo Arkansas. The following is oral history from older family members given about 40 years ago. Margaret and Urban moved to Opolo Arkansas. Margaret did not like Arkansas, so she took the children and returned to St. Wendel by covered wagon. There she kept house for a wealthy widower. He allowed her to live in his house with her children. The "good people" in th
