My Father arrived in America in1894,from a place called Lascimir. I'm told it was in the southern part of Poland known as Galicia. I can't seem to find it .can someone help me? and by the way his surname is Stopera.

Hello Dorothy:

Where did you get the name of the town? Was it off a document? I can't locate it and it sounds as though it had been written down wrong. Have you tried the Ellis Island database? It shows 8 Stoperas, two coming from Galicia (or Austria-occupied region of Poland) in 1900 and 1908. Both went to Philadelphia. Where did you father settle?

Cordially,

Sophia

My maiden name is Stopera as well. My Great-Grandfather came from Poland as well. I believe it was Galicia. His name was John and he was born Nov 11, 1890. I am having trouble locating information relating to his parents or siblings. He married Agnes Duma who he met on the boat over to America. Let me know if you have anything that would aid me in my research. Even his death certificate has unknown for parents (the family is fairly tight-lipped). Thanks.

Stopera -Stopyra? with Duma on the same ship.

Try to find Agnes (Agnieszka) Duma who came on the same ship with Jan (Ian, John, Johann) Stopera (stopyra).
Maybe yoy will find this pair.
With greetings from Poland
Wladek.

Thank You

Thank you for your reply. I have explored Ellis Island's website and was hoping to hone in on alternative spellings for Agnes, John and Stopera that were possible "Americanized" when them came over. I thank you for the links and will try to go from that route.
