Have an ancestor James W Taylor died in Monroe County in 1838. Looking for burial place, and more information on him. His wife Margaret died nov 20, 1852 in monroe county.

James is located in the 1830 census as living in the township of 98th Regiment in Monroe County. Looking for history of town and location.

Thanks.

This may not be your James W. Taylor.
I did not find a listing in the Cemetery book for a James W. Taylor death date of 1838.
He may be buried in an unmarked grave like hundreds of others are. In the early years, that was normal. Sometimes a rock marked the spot and over the years the rock got moved about.
The court records may not be your line but they may be related.
If you wish to order copies of any of the records listed, email Jo Stakely at the Madisonville Library. She will charge a fee to make copies.

Do you have any information on James Taylor s/o Philip Taylor, Sr.? I am looking for a James Taylor that married Margaret Burns who was also possibly from Chatham Co. The James W. Taylor I am looking for had children in SC before moving to Monroe Co, TN.

I too am looking for this location in the 1830 census.
What is the current approximate town, what is the history of the 98th regiment, was this a fort?

Kari

I'm unclear what it is unless the county divided into military regiments. What I do is look for some of the same people in the 1850 and 1860 census and you can get a better idea of where they were in Monroe Co. We have a district map on our genweb page. Joy

Before 1850 in the census records the household locations were divided into Regimental districts...each one with it's own 'captain'. One of the projects we've had in mind at the archives is to try to pinpoint where each district was since we cannot find a map for that time that has these districts marked.

Thanks for the answer

Is there any indication of who was the Captain in the census itself. I dont see that designation, but maybe i'm missing it.

The captains for each district likely would have been in the county court records or perhaps in the tax records. Monroe doesn't have county court records prior to 1858 so that is not an option. The tax records are in the archives at the courthouse in Madisonville. For a small fee the archivist might be able to do a lookup if you'll give her a call. 423 420 0910 or you can send a written request to 105 College Street, Suite 10, Madisonville, TN 37354
