Surnames: Ptacek
I am seeking any information on Frank and Barbara Ptacek, who came over from Czechoslovakia in 1914. They settled in Chicago and were living there on 18th Avenue by the time of the 1920 census. Apparently, Barbara was significantly older than Frank, but she is listed as his wife on both the census and the manifest of the German registry ship they came on. They were the apparent sponsors for their three nieces (Anna, Maria, and Ludmila (Sarman[ova]) who came to this country. Please help!

In my family research I have this name coming from Milan, Bohemia, Czech area about 1900 with relatives in Chicago area.first names John and Mary E., but somehow, before the first children went to school in US, the last was changed to Stochek. Have you ever hear of this situation? The arrived on a ship which I believe was the sister ship of the original ship they left German on. hope to hear from you. PJ

Hello, Patricia,

Thank you for your inquiry on my message regarding Frank Ptacek. While the names and dates you gave do not match with the Frank and Barbara Ptacek of my research, it's still possible that there is a connection. The circumstances of their marriage (1910) and emigration (1914) were quite unusual, since Frank was actually younger than Barbara's son, Vaclav Richter, who had emigrated to the U.S. with other relatives as early as 1903. Of course, it is also a bit more probable that your relatives are unrelated to Frank, but simply had the same surname, which was fairly common in some areas of Czechoslovakia.

I am willing to pursue this matter further and hope that we can determine whether or not there is a connection.

All the best,

Mary
