I am looking for Jarvis Barnes CRAVEN, b. 1798 in Colleton Co. His wife was Sarah Ann ROBERTSON b. 1800. In 1860 their household contained Jarvis 60, Ann (Sarah Ann) 60, Ann 34, Sarah WILLIAMS age 26, Lawrence CRAVEN or WILLIAMS 3, and a male infant CRAVEN or WILLIAMS 2/12. My husband's grandfather was known as Lawrence CRAVEN. Was he a WILLIAMS or a CRAVEN? Dose anyone know about this family and can help me untangle this mystery?

Hi Leatha:

My husbands great grandfather Lawrence Craven was b. in 1856 in Colleton Co. SC. He was living with his great grandfather Jarvis Barnes Craven in 1860 along with his mother and sister Rebecca, but there last name is listed as Williams. He left SC after 1880 and ended up in Oregon where he married Ella Josephine Rose. His eldest son Perry Thomas Craven was my husbands father.

I have a lot of information, and also a lot of questions about the name Williams, and why in 1870 he is living with Jarvis Barnes Craven and his name is now Lawrence Craven.

My husbands name is Lawrence Craven.

I talked to a few years ago. There is no Indian blood in your background. My husband is Lawrence Deane Craven. He was the son of Perry Thomas Craven brother to your grandmother Dessie Ragan. Their father was Lawrence C. Craven and Ella Josephine Rose. Ella was the daughter of Randolph Rose and Rachel Beaver. The Beaver name comes from the german name Bieber. Rachel was the daughter of Peter Beaver and Susanah Hodson who were Quakers. There is no Indian blood on either side of the family

I have been researching this family for the past ten yeats. I have met your mothers sisters Betty and Jane. We have all attended a Rose Family reunion in Roseburg, Oregon. I have found Peter Beaver on the 1850 census in Iowa. My husband and I even visited the cemetery in Iowa where Susannah Frasier Beaver, Peter's second wife is buried. Gayle Mark is the person who gets the organizes the Rose Reunion. She has done years of research on this family. Peter Beaver married Susannah Hodson in 1839 in Hamilton Co. Indiana.

Peter Beaver was the son of Johan George Bieber and Magdalena Garber. Johan was born in Berks Co. PA and moved to North Carolina. He then moved to Ohio where Peter was born. Peter migrated to Indiana where he married Rachel. He and Rachel moved to IA where Rachel died bef. 1850. Peter remarried in 1852.

If you would like any of my information please let me know.
There is no Indian blood in this family, no matter how they look. Bloodline is what counts. I have information on both sides of your family.

I have a question for you. Do you have any proof that your great grandmother Rachel Beaver was of Indian descendt? I would like to correspond with you about this, but every time I try to solve this problem you do not answer me back. Your Aunt Jane also thought there was Indian blood in your family tree, but she now believes that Beaver was originally German and was Bieber, which means beaver in German.

Please, lets compare our info. You left me hanging the last time I contacted you.

I have sent you an email in regards to this posting. I am also including the contents of the email here so that others can see it.

Although I am not a professional researcher, I have done some research on the Colleton Craven lines. In regards to the James Craven who was the father of Jarvis Craven, I do not think that his wife's maiden name was Peeples. From the research I have done, it appears that some researchers have guessed the her maiden name was Peeples because one of her sons was named "Darley Peeples Craven". Therefore, researchers have concluded that since the son's middle name was Peeples, this must be his mother's maiden and was passed on to the son to honor the name.

Darley or Darling Peeples was a well-known minister in the area and many families named their sons after him. I think that probably James Craven and his wife named their son after the minister and that Peeples was not the wife's maiden name. It's just personal opinion, so if you have other information or proof of James Craven's wife's maiden being Peeples, please share it with me.

The only bit of information I have on James' wife is that she was from Maine. This information was included in a short biographical sketch done on one of her sons, Robert Martin Craven, and is included in the book "Montana Its Story and Biography: A History of Aboriginal and Territorial Montana and Three Decades of Statehood, Tom Sout, editor, copyright 1921, Extracted from Chapter 22: Montana's Educational System, Section: State School of Mines, volume 1 p 549." Robert Martin Craven ended up in Montana during the Civil War.

I have other information on this family, namely the children. Perhaps you already have the same information as me, but if not, I am happy to share what I have.

I hope this helps. If anyone else has any other information, please share.
Thanks,
Terri Spencer

Well, you have hit pay dirt. My cousin did years of research and she let me copy them. I don't have all of the Craven info, she turned it over to the Genealogy society in Walterboro, but I have the Bazzle/Bazzel info. You will have to send me your email and tell me just what line you are interested in and I will email to you. Not tonight, I am too tired. But I will get it together this weekend for you.
In the meantime,
Jarvis Barnes Craven, 8-6-1789 to 1877, married Sarah Ann Robertson, 10-7-1797 to 1876.
father was Maj. Robert (Robin) Cravens 1750/60 VA to 1830 Ark., married Abigail Harrison 1780 Ky - 1794 SC.
Robert was s/o William Cravens, 1723 Del -1784 Va, married Jane Harrison.
William s/o Capt Robert Cravens, Sr., 1696 Del or NJ - 1782 VA., married Mary Harrison, 1696 NY - 1781 VA.
There is a "probably" in here and then it picks up again and goes all the way back to 1295. This is from the files of P. VK of Salt Lake City. This line continues from Jarvis to James E. to Robt Martin to Walter Sidney To Robert Wm in Utah. My line comes from Jarvis to Thomas who died in Civil War at Elmira prison, to Edward and Elizabeth Bazzle Craven to Victoria and Stephen Bazzle, to my husband's father and then him. Maebelle

I put in earlier message that our family genealogist researched the Cravens and got some info from other people. I don't know if this is proven, but will assume that it is as true genealogists do not put info into their charts unless it is proven. So...

Anna Bazzle Scott was my paternal grandmother. I actually lived with her for many years as a child. You would have met my three uncles. My father was Heyward Scott who died in 1987. I have been trying to not only trace family history but to determine if auto-immune disorders such as Lupus is prevalent in the Bazzle line. I have found that there have been several with similar diagnoses on our (recent generations) Bazzle line but I can't determine if it comes from the Gabe Bazzle line or his wife Ida Sullivan's line.

Would love to know when family reunions are scheduled.
