Knoxville in Dubois

Looking for any information about a Knoxville that was in Dubois County, as my 3rd great grandfather, Thomas W Campbell was to have settled there in 1807 and was married there in 1821.

Also, was Dubois County ever considered part of Dearborn County and if so, when? Obituaries mention that in 1820's a Knoxville was in Dearborn County

Sorry. I do not have the answer yet. I think it must be in Harbison Township, maybe around the town of Dubois. I see the family names SCHOTT in 1879, ARNOLD in 1886, and NEUKAM in 1889 somehow connected to the place in church records. Too bad I do not have any historical maps showing place names in the 1800s.
Dearborn County is near Cincinnati and has to be 100 miles from Dubois County

Knoxville was one of the former names of the town of Dubois, IN in the northeast corner of Dubois county. The town is on the boundary of Harbison and Marion townships.
Other names for the town were Kelso's Mill, Polson's Mill, Polsonville and Polsontown.

Ron:

Was interested to read your post stating Dubois was formerly known as Polson's Mill, Polsonville, etc. My great grandfather, William P. Noble, was raised by Isabella Noble Polson, wife of Robert S. Polson, a miller. (Married 1843.)

Robert's brother, Thomas Polson (also a miller) married Nancy Noble. Do you know if the "Polson" town connection comes from either of these brothers?

Thanks for any clarification or info.

I wish I knew more about Dubois (Polson's Mill), but I am just researching it as it connects to my Thomas William Campbell (possibly son of a John Cambell or Campbell from Kent Co, Maryland) and his wife, Sarah Moore and have not researched the origins of Polson's Mill, but would be interested in residents of the town, etc.

Sorry, but good luck,

Pat Walker

The Polson brothers and the Nobel Girls......

I tried to send this by e-mail but it bounced.

While I am not descended from either of these lines, Nancy E. (Isabella & Robert’s daughter) Polson married Jacob Bell who was the son of John J & Margaret BELL. It has been reported that Margaret was a Nobel.

I am researching this line in hopes of running my line back to a common link to verify this as fact.

I have been working the Bell line for the last 25 years and it has been a brick wall.

It is my believe that Nancy Jane and Isabella Jane were either sisters or cousins. The census records show that Elizabeth Jane Nobel was living with Nancy J. in 1850.

DO you have anything to define the relationship of William P and his brother John to Isabella Polson? They are living with her in both 1850 and 1860 according to the Census. Brothers? Cousins? And how do they relate to Nancy and Elizabeth Noble?

More questions than answers I fear….

Respectfully,

Gordon W. Bell

The book "Wilson's History of Dubois County, Indiana 1910" mentions that the town of Dubois was originally known as Knoxville. Several members of the Polson family are also mentioned as early settlers.

Do you have access to this History of Dubois County? Could you possibly do a lookup of Campbell or Cambell? I spent a lot of time researching in Dearborn and also Knox Counties and did not find the family I was looking for, so maybe they did go to Knoxville, Dubois.

Thanks, Pat

Pat,

The Campbell's listed in the index are:
G.B. (Rev.)
James
Mary
Parks
Additionally, on four other pages a mention is made of a person named Campbell with no first name mentioned.

None of these people are mentioned in the section of the book on Knoxville (Dubois) Indiana.

Thanks again for the lookup. I suspect that there was a mixup in memory of where they settled--and that the Dearborn County is correct, not the Knoxville part. None of the Campbell's you list look familiar. Is there a time period available for the mention of "Campbell" in the four other pages?
