Amariah Carrier, Honor Hogins

For those interested in Amariah Carrier: I have a letter/genealogy written by Solomon Shefield Carrier in 1901 or before. He says: "He was the son of Jesse H. Carrier and was born June 9, 1826 in Jamestown NY. He says his father was born in Albany NY in 1794 and moved with his folks to Chautaugue county in 1810 and settled on the west side of Chautauque Lake. He says Jesse's father was Amariah Carrier and that he knows very little about his ancestors except that his father died in the army when he was small. His mother married a man by the name of Enoch Rowley and had two children by that marriage, Enoch and Polly.
On the Hogins side he says that his grandfather (Amariah) married Honer Hogins. By that union there were eight children: Jesse, my father, Samantha, Robert, Rachel, David, Henry, Lucy and Amariah.
Grandfather Hogins was an old Revolutionary soldier. He served seven years during the war. Grandmother Hogins had one brother who name was Amos. Granfather Hogins came west with Grandfather Carrier. I recollect him well. I was about eight years old when his died. His wife died some years before he did. They were buried on the west side of Chautauque Lake. Amos, grandmother's brother, raised a large family, six boys and three girls. I disremember their names. Some of them are about the Lakes yet, or was a few years ago.

I would be interested in information on Honor Hogins. Thanks Linda

We need your help! If you actually have something that can not only prove the marriage of Honor Hogins to Amariah but anything that can prove his birth date or parents we (Carrier Geneaologists) have been searching for years. Amariah had a tiwn named Amaziah but we can not prove it so we can not claim the family without proof. We have alot of postings on Rootweb (Carrier) if you want more info. Please contact one of us with what you have.

At this time I do not have any additional information other than the letter written by Jesse Carrier about his ancestry. It appears that his father died when he was young which would rule out Amos as his father. I am thinking that Amos possibly had a brother who died in the war whom we know nothing about. The official records do not give Amariah as a son of Amos, they list only one child...these are printed records on the net, so I don't know what the actual records say. Possibly whomever extracted the records thought that the names were duplicate and only copies Amaziah? Possibly, but original records need to be located to confirm this. I have no more Honor informaton. Sorry. Linda

I'm not sure what you mean about Amos. Amariah is who you said the letter mentions as Jesses father, Amos would be grandfather to Jesse. Isn't the letter from written by Solomon, Jesse son, so Jesse is the one who died young?

As for the records they don't seem to give Amariah a father at all yet there are lots of records that Amariah existed in the same areas at the same time with lots of descendants who all are clearly not Amaziahs. Anyway...

I could not find any record in the DAR website for Hogins in the Revolutionary war. Perhaps we can get some pension papers if the widow applied before she remarried.

Thanks for the glimer of hope.

Clarification of the letter (1901)from S.S. Carrier (Solomon, this is how I read it which would indicate that Amariah's father was possibly an unknown brother/cousin of Amaziah but not the son of Amos. I, too, feel that they are related but no longer feel that they are siblings. Following Enoch Rowley may give some clues or clarification.

"I, S. S. Carrier, was born June 9 1926 in Jamestown, N.Y. My father (Jesse) was born near Albany, N. Y. in 1894 and moved with his folks to Chautauque County in 1810 and settled on the west side of Chautauque Lake. His father's name was Amariah Carrier. I know very little of his ancestors (I read this to mean Amariah's ancestors). His father (Amariah's) died in the army when he was small. His mother (Amariah's) married a man by the name of Enoch Rowley. There were two children by that marriage, Enoch and Polly. Don't know where they settled."

THESE ARE MY RESEARCH NOTES: Amariah named a son David which may or may not mean a thing: !!

"ACCORDING TO S. S. CARRIER, AMARIAH'S FATHER DIED IN THE ARMY WHEN HE WAS SMALL,...AMARIAH WAS 39 WHEN AMOS DIED...AMOS MAY NOT BE HIS FATHER????

Does anyone have any documention that Amariah Carrier died in 1847. It appears that the date has been calculated from his age at 93 and Amaziah's birth date. Help? Linda

I don't have any documentation at all. We can't even verify where Amariah is buried to the best of my knowledge. He's turning into a real bugger!
I am (when time permits)going to try getting Amaziahs military record because I want to see in person the one paper that has Amariahs name on it. It one item that they are crediting Amaziah with as far as something with returning equipment. Some of the time line is sketchy as far as Amaziahs whereabouts at the same time this stuff was returned and where. I don't have my notes with me. My daughter just got married and all this has been a back burner for a while.
I found it by accident and was unable to print or find since.

I think that genealogists have also jumped a generation and that Amariah was born between 1770 and 1780. The 1830 census has both he and his wife listed as age fifty to sixty. Amos and Phebe would be too old to have children by then.

I have found both of the children of Amariah and Honor who were still living in 1880. Both of these, Robert in Iowa and Lucy in Randolph, Crawford County NY say that both of their parents were born in New York.

Amariah's first child was born in Albany New York in 1794. S. S. Carrier said that Amariah's father died in the Army. So what Carrier was in Albany in 1770? Amos, son of Amos and Phebe was in the Rev. from New York, listed as 30 years old, deserter. (At least I suspect that this was the son of Amos as there doesn't seem to be any other place for him.} My thoughts are that Amos married there, had Amariah, went off to war, deserted or was killed and didn't return. His wife, remarried to a Rowley (S. S. says Enoch) and had two more children, Enoch and Polly. I can't seem to get a handle on an Enoch Rowley of that time period in either New York or Conn. where there are lots of Rowleys, and am wondering if S. S. was confused about the given name. Amariah named his first child Jesse. Could that have been after a step-father? There are some Jesse Rowleys hanging around.

Your turn. Linda
