Burgher briefs

I have an ancestor who was an estate manager in the mid 1800s on St Croix. The 1841 census says he had a Burgher Brief in 1824. As I understand it this is a form of citizenship. Does anyone know where records of these may be found?

A burgher brief is a business licenses. Those records are also available at the St. Croix Landmarks Society Library at Estate Whim. Here is an article that can give you some info about the data base that makes it easy to locate information.

You may also Google African Roots Project to get updated information. That data base was launched in July 2009. It is also available at the Florence Williams Library in Christiansted.

Yes, quite a bit. Thanks for your comment. Are you related to VISHA's Roland Roebuck?

We have a Thomas van Beverhoudt, (sometimes listed as McBeverhoudt or just Beverhoundt) living as a partner to the mother of our great grandfather.
