Hi Kylie,
I'm born and bred in Hastings. I was born in 1966 to Frank Alan Bumstead and Irene Dorthy Bumstead. My grandmothers name is Daisy Bumstead and my grandfathers name was George Bumstead. George was definately born in Hastings, I'm not sure when but it must have been around 1920. George passed away back in the early 80's.
I don't know of any great great grandfathers (or mothers) in Hastings, but then I've never asked. I'll check with my parents. I still live in Hastings with my wife Jackie, as do my parents, grandmother and my brother.
There are also one or two other Bumstead families in Hastings that are not (in recent history) related to my family. I'm pretty sure there aren't any others.
I've just checked the phone book and apart from my grandmother there are two other entries:

One J F Bumstead and one N Bumstead.

My brother and his wife (Neal and Kerry Bumstead) and my parents are ex-directory, so the two individuals above are the other two Bumstead clans I mentioned. My uncle Alex Bumstead lives in Harrow, North London. My other uncle Cliff passed away many years ago

Hope this info is useful.

Maf

I was doing some research on my Surry ancestors on the 1891 census. I came across this listing on the same page:
Hastings, St. Clement, Church Street, p. 38)
William Bumstead, age 57, wine merchant’s assist., Sussex, Hastings
Sophia “ 56, , Somerset, Bath
Egbert C. 22, fishmonger’s assist. , Sussex, Hastings
William 19, eating house assist. , “ “
Rose A 16, general servant , “ “
???? , son 12, scholar , “ “
Frank , grandson, 8, scholar , “ “

Any connection?

Everybody in East Sussex named Bumsted, Bumpsted, Bumstead or Bumpstead appears to be descended from Edward Bumpsted and Dorothy Mills, who married in Guestling in 1692. This includes my wife, who is their ggggggggrandaughter. I can point you to some sources if you want to know more.
Best wishes,

Dear Derrick,
I'm not very well up on the late 19th century Bum(p)steads in Sussex, partly because my wife's ancestors had moved to Kent by then. The authority on Sussex Bum(p)steads is Frank Leach. I have looked in the records he sent me some years ago, and can't find an Alfred or a Frederick. I have come across Henry Carter, though. Ann Bumstead, b. 1835 in Rye, Sussex, married William Carter in Iden 1856.William's father was Henry Carter. Another of Henry's sons, George, appears to have married Ann's sister Kezia (b 1837) on the same day in the same place. Now neither of these could have been direct forbears of your John Henry Carter Bumsted (or Bumstead?) However, there were other branches of the Bum(p)ste(a)d family living within a few miles, and there are several instances in the 19th century of other related family names being used as Christian names. The brother of Ann & Kezia was Joseph (b. 1845 Rye); I know nothing further about him, but he is a possible father for John Henry Carter Bumstead. Joseph was the only son. His parents were Stephen Bumstead (b 1796) and Phoebe Gurr.
I suggest you look on FreeBMD or 1837.com to investigate John HC' s possible relationship to Joseph. Sorry I can't follow this myself at the moment. If this were to turn out to be correct, it would fit with my original claim that all Sussex Bum(p)ste(a)ds come from the Edward Bumpsted/Dorothy Mills marriage of 1692, as Joseph was their ggggrandson.
Good Hunting!
If I can help further, mail me direct at c.w.boyne@bton.ac.uk

Dear Hilary & Derrick,
Thanks for your reply. This has got me going now! I should know better than to give off-the-cuff suggestions or start chasing Bum(p)stead genealogies. I had a look for myself this morning. FreeBMD wasn't helpful at first, but LDS was more useful. The 1881 census has Joseph Bumstead (b. Iden 1845) living in Battersea, S London, a maltster, with 5 children, including a son John (no further names shown, b. about 1872). The 1901 census has a John Bumstead (30), a stoker, living in Battersea and also a Frederick , aged 3. I can't check the full names, addresses and relationships without spending money (there were only 2 John Bumstead's aged between 20 and 40 in England in 1901; however, according to FreeBMD there were 3 Frederick Bumsteads born in S. London in 1897-8); but there is a prima facie case for saying that this Fred (who may be your Fred) was the grandson of Joseph (1845), and therefore the ggrandson of Stephen (b.1796) and Phoebe, gggrandson of Stephen (b.1778) and Mary. The earlier generations of the line are shown below.

Edward Bumpsted
born c 1670
married Dorothy Mills at Guestling, East Sussex on 23rd February 1692
they had Ann (1692- ), Edward(1692-1739)and Thomas

Thomas Bumpsted
born 7th April 1700 at Guestling
married Mary Bumstead c 1727
they had Thomas, William, John and Edward
he died in 1782

Edward Bumstead
born 1st November 1737 at Hastings
married Susannah King at Ewhurst on 16th November 1771
they had Susannah, Thomas, Edward and Stephen

Stephen Bumstead
born 11th January 1778 at Peasmarsh
married Mary Watman on 1st June 1796 at Wittersham
they had Stephen, Mary, Edward, Jane, James, Harriet and George

We are still trying to find where Edward came from. The earliest Bum(p)ste(a)ds come from Essex/Suffolk, and the name goes back to the 1200's. Alan Bumpstead (see thread on Ancestry.com) is the expert on the main branch and is (I hope) still looking for 'our' Edward's origins, and hence the source of the Sussex Branch.

Regards,
Chris Boyne

Chris,

I'm pretty sure I have an Edward Bumstead in my tree - I'm a Hastings, "Sussex Bumstead".

I think the link is via Stephen Bumstead - one of his sons is an Edward. I'll work backwards from me:-

Matthew Alan Bumstead - b 1966

Frank Alan Bumstead - b 1940 (my Father)

Frank George Bumstead - b 1918 d 1980ish (GrandFather)

Thomas Edward Bumstead - b 18?? d 1943 (GGrandfather)

John James Bumstead - b 1837 d ???? (GGGrandfather)

Edward Bumstead - I have no further information on him, but I think he is my GGGGrandfather

As far as I know, all were born in or around Hastings, Sussex. It is very interesting the way the names Edward, John and Stephen keep cropping up. My uncle is John Bumstead!!

Regasrds,
Matthew
