Dear
Hilary & Derrick,
Thanks for your reply. This has got me going now! I should know better than to give off-the-cuff suggestions or start chasing Bum(p)stead genealogies. I had a look for myself this morning. FreeBMD wasn't helpful at first, but LDS was more useful. The 1881 census has Joseph
Bumstead (b. Iden 1845) living in Battersea, S
London, a maltster, with 5 children, including a son John (no further names shown, b. about 1872). The 1901 census has a John
Bumstead (30), a stoker, living in Battersea and also a Frederick , aged 3. I can't check the full names, addresses and relationships without spending money (there were only 2 John Bumstead's aged between 20 and 40 in
England in 1901; however, according to FreeBMD there were 3 Frederick Bumsteads born in S. London in 1897-8); but there is a prima facie case for saying that this Fred (who may be your Fred) was the grandson of Joseph (1845), and therefore the ggrandson of Stephen (b.1796) and Phoebe, gggrandson of Stephen (b.1778) and Mary. The earlier generations of the line are shown below.

We are still trying to find where Edward came from. The earliest Bum(p)ste(a)ds come from Essex/Suffolk, and the name goes back to the 1200's. Alan Bumpstead (see thread on Ancestry.com) is the expert on the main branch and is (I hope) still looking for 'our' Edward's origins, and hence the source of the
Sussex Branch.
